Wilson scores 31 but Leafs lose triple-overtime thriller in Upland

This was the third triple-overtime game in program history

UPLAND, Ind. - The Goshen men's basketball team played their third triple-overtime game in program history at Taylor on Saturday. But for the first time, it resulted in a loss. The Trojans won 110-102 despite 31 points from Richard Wilson, who fouled out in the second overtime.

This was Goshen's third game this season where they have scored over 100 points. Taylor scored the first five points of the game, but the Maple Leafs had as much as a seven-point lead in the first half and led by five at the halftime break. With 8:02 to go, Goshen had an 11-point lead after two made free-throws from Richard Wilson. The Trojans chipped away, but they were still down six with 31 seconds left. That's when Nate Paarlberg used just four seconds to hit a three to cut the lead in half. After a Goshen turnover on their next possession, Taylor made a layup in transition to pull within one. DJ Bryant was fouled, and went 1-2 at the line. Down two, Kaden Fuhrmann made a layup with ten seconds to go and Judah Simfukwe missed his attempt at the other end to send the game to overtime.

Tied at 87-87 in the final seconds of overtime, Richard Wilson hit a jumper in the paint with nine seconds left. Taylor used a timeout, and Anton Webb scored for the home team to send the game to a second five-minute overtime period. This time, Taylor had the two-point lead and Goshen had to score in the final seconds. Marcus Northern did just that, nailing a jumper at the end to tie the game at 98.

Goshen had only been in triple-overtime two other times. In 1972, they won 87-86 at Grace in three overtimes. Then in 2007, then won 95-85 in three overtimes at Taylor. With Richard Wilson fouling out with 1:36 to go in the second overtime, Goshen was without their leading scorer in the game - he had 31 points. Taylor outscored Goshen 12-4 in the third overtime period to win 110-102.

Wilson's 31 points is the most by a GC player since Michael Johnson scored 32 against Saint Francis on November 20, 2021. He had nine rebounds and three steals and shot the ball very efficiently. He was 10-13 from the field, 5-7 from downtown and 6-6 at the line. He is the second person on the team to make six or more free-throws in a game without a miss, joining Judah Simfukwe's 6-6 performance at the line on Wednesday against SAU.

Marcus Northern made a career-high five threes, scoring a season-high 21 points in total. His eight field goals made is a season-high and ties his career high. Juraj Minarovjech tied a season-high with nine assists. Judah Simfukwe had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Goshen is at Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:00 pm.
