Leafs battle hard on Pink Out night, fall to Spring Arbor in tight three-set match

Lard racked up 14 kills and 16 digs

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen had a set point in the second set and played a close third set with Spring Arbor, but the Cougars won in three, 25-14, 26-24, 25-22.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night hosted at each of the five home sites in the Crossroads League on Wednesday, the Maple Leafs held a raffle and donated 15% of ticket proceeds to the Goshen Center for Cancer Care to provide free mammogram screenings to those in need.

Spring Arbor had 15 first-set kills and created separation with a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 lead midway in the set. They ended up winning the set by 11. SAU led 7-4 in the second set, but the Maple Leafs went on a run of their own. GC scored nine of the next ten to go up 13-8. Spring Arbor was able to tie it 21-21 and again at 23-23. But when an Addison Ross kill gave Goshen a 24-23 edge, they were a point away from winning the set. However, a Goshen attack error followed by an ace and a kill from the visitors led to a 2-0 hole that Goshen would have to dig out of.

The teams went back and forth in the third set and Goshen led as late as 21-20, but SAU finished the match on a 5-1 run and took the set 25-22. The Cougars improved to 18-7 this season with the win.

Sami Lard had 14 kills and 16 digs. It's the first time she had ten or more in both of the categories in the same match in her collegiate career. Her 16 digs tied a career high and the 14 kills were one away from a career high. Carmin Corey had a career high with nine kills. She led the team with a .240 hitting percentage as well. Sydney Stutsman had 18 assists and Kelsie Hankins' 16 assists were her most since August 19. Alaina Wolfe totaled 14 digs and passed her former teammate Sadie Brenneman to move up to seventh in program history in career digs, now sitting at 1,166.

Goshen is at Saint Francis on Saturday, October 18, at 4:00 pm.
