Saints complete comeback to beat Maple Leafs by three

Goshen knocked down then three-pointers in the game

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Maple Leafs women's basketball team was outscored 20-8 in the fourth quarter at home against Aquinas on Saturday afternoon as the Saints earned a come-from-behind victory. The visitors prevailed 69-66. Five of the last seven matchups between the two schools have been decided by five points or fewer.

Goshen started with a dominant 12-2 lead. Zy'Ann Phinezy connected on a pair of three-pointers, and Paulecia Isom picked up where Phinezy left off by sinking two more. Aquinas cut the lead to six at 27-21, but then the Leafs strung together a 13-4 run to go up 15, 40-25. Goshen was up 48-36 at the half.

While the Leafs went 9-20 from three in the first two quarters, they were just 1-13 in the third and fourth. The Aquinas defense found their way, allowing just 18 points after the half. They tied the game with just under five minutes remaining, took the lead, and then saw their lead erased as a three from Carrie Hiler made it 66-63 in favor of Goshen. The Saints quickly scored two the other way, and made a free-throw on the and-one. Neither team scored a basket after that, as the three remaining Aquinas points were free-throws.

Carrie Hiler had career-highs with 17 points and five three-pointers. Her six field goals tied a career-high. Zy'Ann Phinezy also had 17 points and shot 55% from the field. After starting 0-17 from behind the arc this season, she hit two today, finishing 2-6 from long-range. The Leafs started 4-4 as a team from three and were 6-11 in the first quarter. After that point, they were 4-17. The ten threes made is a season high.

Goshen is at #13 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 19, at 5:00 pm.
