BABSON PARK, Fla. - A late three-pointer from
Deecon Hill and some clutch free-throws in overtime led to a 69-68 win for the Goshen men's basketball team over Webber International. This was Goshen's first overtime win since a 93-90 double-overtime victory over Spring Arbor in 2022.
Goshen now has six wins this season, which already surpasses their total from a year ago. This is their most wins in a season since the 2021-2022 season.
The Maple Leafs had a rough start, only shooting 25% in the first half. The Warriors led 33-22 at the break. Goshen regrouped and started the second half on a 13-2 run to tie the game 35-35.
Saiveon Williams hit a three to tie it after making a layup on the previous possession.
Kenny May scored four points during the rally and Jurah Minarovjech and
Marcus Northern each made baskets as well.
Goshen took a three-point lead but lost it with 9:16 to go in the half. The score was either tied or in favor of Webber International until the Maple Leafs got the ball, down one, with 33 seconds left. Goshen native
Deecon Hill banked a three-pointer and gave the Leafs a 59-57 lead. The Warriors' Deon Brown made a layup at the other end with six seconds left to tie it, and
Marcus Northern's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good, sending the game to overtime.
Northern made a layup and a jumper in overtime that broke a 63-63 tie and gave Goshen a 67-63 advantage. Brown hit a three for Webber International to cut it within one. He finished with 21 points and went 5-8 from three, but those would be the last points he would score.
Saiveon Williams made a pair of free throws, and Goshen was able to hold onto the slim lead with a 69-68 win.
After shooting 25% in the first half, Goshen improved to a 50% field goal percentage in the second half and 60% in overtime. The Leafs had the lead for a combined four minutes and 22 seconds over the 40 minutes in regulation and for four minutes and five seconds of the five minute overtime period. The Warriors had the lead for 60% of the game.
The Leafs struggled at the free-throw line (11-20) but committed seven fewer turnovers than Webber International and led in steals 8-3.
Marcus Northern had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Braden Allen scored ten and went 4-7 from the floor.
Deecon Hill topped his career-high point total of ten from the day before with 11 points - going 3-5 from three with the crucial one late in the second half.
Jacob Carlson also scored 11 points. Carlson and Hill both played 14 minutes off the bench.
Goshen faced Webber International two seasons ago, but the Warriors came out on top 91-81. This is Goshen's first wins in back-to-back road games since November 2016 and their first time with a pair of wins on consecutive days since November 3-4 of 2017.
