MELBOURNE, Fla. - Goshen lost two games by a combined three runs against Shawnee State on Saturday, the final two of their ten games in Florida. The Bears, who are receiving votes in the coaches poll, won 2-0 and 10-9.
Game One
Goshen had just two hits in the game.
Shea VanScoter had a single in the first after
Bianca Diamond walked, but the two were left on base by the inning's end. Diamond had a single in the third and moved to second on an error, but was left stranded after a flyout.
Shawnee State got on the board in the bottom of the third from a pair of RBI doubles. After quick fourth and fifth innings, Goshen loaded the bases after Diamond reached on an error, VanScoter was hit by a pitch and
Grace Schmitt walked. A strikeout with the bases loaded left the score 2-0, and the Maple Leafs went down three in a row in the seventh.
While she had the loss, starter
Camryn Barrows pitched her longest outing of the season, going six innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. She struck out two batters and walked one.
Game Two
In game two, the Bears left the bases loaded in the top of the first. With
Kaylee Kates and
Alyssa McDonald on base in the bottom of the first,
Shea VanScoter hit a two-RBI triple which was followed by an RBI groundout from
Ella Mcleod to make it 3-0 in favor of the Maple Leafs. Goshen added another three in the third from an RBI double by VanScoter and a two-RBI single from
Kamille Badibanga.
GC starter
Esme Pico held Shawnee State scoreless through the first three innings, but the Bears clawed back despite being down six. They scored four runs in each of the next two innings, only answered by an RBI double from
Alyssa McDonald in the fourth. In the sixth they tacked on two more runs to go up 10-7.
Bianca Diamond hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth but the Leafs left two runners on base and left another on base in the seventh, losing by one.
Goshen had two hits in game one but 11 in game two. McDonald had four of them - three singles and a double. She scored twice, hit two RBIs and stole two bases. It was the first four-hit game of her collegiate career. She leads the Crossroads League in stolen bases with six and is second in RBIs with nine. While in Florida, she finished going 15-28 for a .536 batting average, four extra-base hits, nine RBIs and six steals.
Kaylee Kates scored three of Goshen's runs in the game and
Shea VanScoter had three RBIs with a double and a triple.
Kamille Badibanga had two singles and two RBIs.
Esme Pico allowed three earned runs and six total runs in five innings. With the loss, her season record is 2-3.
Goshen (4-6) hosts Grace on Tuesday, March 11, at 3:00 pm.
