Softball sweeps Crossroads League opener

Maple Leafs triumph over Grace with stellar performances from VanScoter, Barrows and Schmitt

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen softball team won both games of their Crossroads League and home opener. The Leafs beat Grace 7-2 and 4-0 with Shea VanScoter, Camryn Barrows and Grace Schmitt leading the way.

Game One
Camryn Barrows faced six batters with some long at-bats in the top of the first, but she escaped with allowing just one run and two runners left on base. The Leafs responded during Shea VanScoter's at bat in the three-spot. She hit a two-run home run, putting her in sole possession of third all-time in program history in career home runs with 19. Later in the inning, Alyssa McDonald scored an error on a dropped fly ball by the Grace center fielder. Goshen led 3-1.

Barrows quickly went through the second inning and left the Lancers with five on base over the next two innings that didn't score. Meanwhile, the Goshen offense extended the lead on an RBI double from Kamille Badibanga and an RBI single from Brinleigh Arredondo in the third. Then in the fourth, Bianca Diamond scored from a sacrifice lineout to left field from VanScoter.

Grace had a sac fly in the fifth to make it 6-2, and VanScoter hit her second home run of the game and the 20th of her career in the sixth inning to make it 7-2. Barrows retired the first three Grace batters in the seventh and the Maple Leafs won 7-2.

Barrows is now 2-1 this season with the win. She allowed two earned runs and eight hits in the seven innings pitched, the eighth complete game of her career. She threw 140 pitches. VanScoter went 2-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBIs. Alyssa McDonald had two stolen bases, two walks and a run scored. Bianca Diamond hit a triple and scored two runs. Carissa Fillingame was 2-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored. The win ended a three-game losing streak against Grace.

Game Two
Grace Schmitt was the better of the two Grace's on the field in game two. She allowed the Grace Lancers to only compile four hits in the game, allowing no earned runs as well. She needed just 81 pitches to get the job done.

The first and second innings were quick 1-2-3 innings, with the Lancers quickly being sent off the field. Goshen scored first on a sac bunt from Kamille Badibanga with Ella Mcleod on third as the pinch runner. In the third, Schmitt helped her own cause with a two-RBI double to right center. Then in the fourth, Badibanga scored on an RBI groundout from Kaylee Kates.

That made it 4-0, and Schmitt continued to dominate in the circle for the latter half of the game to make the Leafs victorious. Since 2019, Goshen is 13-6-1 all-time against Grace.

Brinleigh Arredono had the first three-hit game of her young career, finishing 3-3 with three singles. Grace Schmitt went 2-2 with a double, two RBIs and a walk. Shea VanScoter had two stolen bases.

Goshen (6-6, 2-0 CL) hosts Bethel on Friday, March 14, at 3:00 pm. The Leafs have won eight of the last nine matchups with the Pilots.
