SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Goshen lost in three sets to #3 Lawrence Tech on Saturday. The undefeated Blue Devils are now on a 16-set win streak after defeating the Maple Leafs 25-18, 25-23, 25-18. The all-time series between the two schools is tied 5-5.
Goshen was hanging with one of just three undefeated teams in the NAIA early on. The teams were tied 11-11 in the first set, with one GC point coming from a
Ben Koop play where he got the ball to the other side of the court from the ground. Goshen went on to win the point. After the tied score, the Blue Devils ended the set on a 14-7 run, including a 6-0 run after the tie, to win by seven.
Goshen almost put an end to Lawrence Tech's consecutive set win streak in the second set. The Leafs led 15-12 when the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead. They led by four at 23-19 but Goshen scored three straight, with a block from
Ben Koop and
Jaiden Wallace and an ace and a kill from Koop as well. Koop followed it with a service error, but LTU had an attack error and Goshen was down one again. The home team finished the set with a kill, however, and won 25-23.
Similar to the first set, the second was tied 12-12 before the Blue Devils pulled away. Like the first set, they won by a 25-18 score to improve to 5-0 in the WHAC and 11-0 overall.
Ben Koop had 60% of Goshen's kills, 33% of the digs and all five of the team's aces. He had 15 kills, a .300 hitting percentage and five digs. Avery LaForce had 13 assists and
Igor Sapucaia had nine.
Alessandro Olgiati,
Jaiden Wallace and
Andrea Biffi had three block assists each.
