Pettipiece continues to dominate as Goshen gets major road win at #10 Taylor

The Maple Leafs had nine stolen bases during the win

UPLAND, Ind. - Baseball defeated #10 Taylor 5-1 on the road on Friday due to a dominant start by Eric Pettipiece and errors from the Trojans, who entered the game with a 31-7 record. This was the first time that the Leafs held the Trojans to one run or fewer in Upland since April 30, 1992. The Trojans won the first game 11-0 in seven innings.

Game One
Nine of Taylor's 11 runs from game one came in two innings. They had a five-run third inning and a four-run sixth inning. Goshen had two hits in the first inning but only produced one more over the next six innings. Both teams finished with two errors.

Dylan Pearson had the loss for Goshen, allowing five earned runs in three innings. Brandon Wright Barron gave up no earned runs on just one hit in two innings of relief. That is the longest outing for the reliver this season where he has not allowed an earned run. Goshen's hits, all singles, came from Justin Dambruck, Chase Smith and Fernando Marte Santana.

Game Two
Taylor had five errors in game two, but Goshen made sure to capitalize on them when they had the chance. In the first inning, Chase Smith reached first on a fielding error by the first baseman, which allowed Nick Padron to score from second as he slid across home plate. In the fourth inning, the Leafs scored four runs on three Taylor errors.

The inning started with walks from Chase Smith and Axell Espino Montero. After a strikeout, the two Goshen baserunners advanced after a failed pickoff attempt. A wild pitch caused them to move up another 90 feet, scoring Smith. Another strikeout gave the Maple Leafs two outs in the inning, but then an error by the third baseman allowed Espino Montero to score.

A few stolen bases and a walk later, Nick Padron got on base after the second error in the inning on the Trojans third baseman. That scored Curtis Huffman to make it 4-0. Next to bat was Justin Dambruck, and his RBI single to right field scored Joey Paternostro and made it a 5-0 game.

The Trojans had an RBI single in the fourth but the run was unearned. Eric Pettipiece allowed no earned runs, one run and three hits in his complete game performance. The reigning Everence Student-Athlete of the Week struck out four batters and walked just two in the outing. Pettipiece has thrown at least six innings in his last three outings. In his last 19.1 innings on the mound, the senior has given up just one earned run while striking out 17 batters. His ERA over that span is 0.48.

GC had a season-high nine stolen bases in the game, tying their record for the most in a game since stealing 16 in a 12-2 win over IU-Northwest on April 4, 2008 - another game where the Leafs recorded just five hits in the game. This time around, Chase Smith and Curtis Huffman had two each. Nick Padron, Justin Dambruck, Axell Espino Montero, Nathan Pinedo and Joey Paternostro each had one. Dambruck had two of Goshen's five hits.

The Leafs have five conference wins against five different Crossroads League opponents this season. They take on Taylor again on Saturday on the road starting at 1:00 pm.
