MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Softball's conference win streak improved to eight games in a row with their 11-3 game one win at Bethel on Monday. The Pilots snapped the streak in game two with their 8-7 extra innings win. With the win in the first game, GC head coach
Luke Wagner has more conference wins than any other coach in program history.
Dawn Austin held the previous record of 41 conference wins achieved during her time as head coach from 1997-2003. Not only does Wagner now have the most conference wins, but he also has the best win percentage in conference games among all coaches in program history.
Game One
Goshen scored with their third batter of the game and then never looked back. After
Shea VanScoter walked,
Alyssa McDonald doubled to send VanScoter to third. A passed ball in the next at-bat allowed VanScoter to score and McDonald scored on an error that allowed
Bianca Diamond to reach first base. In the third inning it was a two-RBI double from
Rachel Kates that increased the Goshen lead to 4-0.
Esme Pico, Goshen's starter, allowed just one hit in her first five innings. Then in the top of the sixth, Goshen put up seven runs to go up 11-0. The Leafs had six hits in the inning and Bethel committed two errors. The highlights of the inning included a two-RBI double down the left field line from
Tatem Adams and another RBI double to left from
Brinleigh Arredondo.
Bethel strung together four singles in a row in the bottom of the sixth and scored three runs but Goshen still won by run rule 11-3 in six innings. Pico is 5-6 this season with the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits in the complete game performance.
Alyssa McDonald had a single and a double, three runs and two walks.
Kamille Badibanga hit a pair of singles and had two stolen bases.
Rachel Kates had three RBIs and
Tatem Adams had two more. Bethel had five errors in the game.
Game Two
The Pilots scored two first inning runs off of
Camryn Barrows in the second game but Goshen had solo home runs from
Kamille Badibanga and
Shea VanScoter in the third inning to tie it up. After an RBI single for the Pilots, Goshen scored three runs in the fourth as
Grace Schmitt and
Brinleigh Arredondo hit RBI singles and
Kamille Badibanga hit an RBI groundout.
Goshen lost the 5-3 lead quickly though, when Bethel had a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single for the home team made it 7-5 in their favor going into the final inning. In the top of the seventh with two outs,
Rachel Kates hit an RBI single on a 2-0 count to score
Shea VanScoter.
Tatem Adams came up next and singled to center on a 3-2 count to score
Alyssa McDonald and tie the game.Â
In extras, Goshen left one runner on base and Bethel scored in the bottom of the inning to win 8-7.
Grace Schmitt had five strikeouts and no walks in 5.2 innings of relief, but she took the loss after allowing five earned runs.
Shea VanScoter,
Rachel Kates and
Brinleigh Arredondo had two hits each. VanScoter scored twice and
Kamille Badibanga had two RBIs.
