SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Esme Pico and
Camryn Barrows combined to walk just one batter in their combined 12 innings pitched on Tuesday at Spring Arbor. However, the Cougars escaped with narrow 1-0 and 4-3 victories over the Maple Leafs. Five of Goshen's last eight losses have been one-run losses.
Game One
A third-inning solo home run from Mataija Cerroni was the only run scored in game one between the two teams. It was one of five hits for Spring Arbor as Goshen had four. The best chance for the Leafs to score came in the sixth.
Kaylee Kates and
Shea VanScoter started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Ella Mcleod reached on a fielder's choice and
Kaylee Kates was out at third. Then,
Bianca Diamond grounded out but VanScoter and Mcleod were now at second and third. A strikeout ended the inning and the Maple Leafs went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Esme Pico went six innings for the Leafs and now has a 6-7 record with the loss. She allowed one earned run on five hits and threw two strikeouts while walking one. Goshen batters struck out seven times and their hits were all singles. They came from
Shea VanScoter,
Tatem Adams,
Carissa Fillingame and
Kaylee Kates.
Game Two
Game one took just an hour and fifteen minutes, and game two wasn't much longer at an hour and twenty minutes. Goshen's first run of the day came in the second inning as
Carissa Fillingame hit an RBI groundout that scored
Kamille Badibanga.
SAU scored twice in the third on an RBI bunt single and a Goshen throwing error. Their two runs in the fourth inning were the result of an RBI triple and an RBI groundout.
Bianca Diamond hit a two-RBI double in the fifth to put Goshen within one.
Kaylee Kates was heading to the plate with the hope of making it a bases-clearing hit and tying the game, but she was out at home. Goshen left runners at second and third in the sixth after singles from
Kamille Badibanga and
Ella Mcleod in the inning. In the seventh, the game ended after a strikeout and two groundouts.
Camryn Barrows allowed three earned runs and six hits in six innings pitched. She struck out three and walked none.
Kamille Badibanga had two of Goshen's five hits. She also scored a run and walked.
Bianca Diamond hit a double and had two RBIs.
Ella Mcleod and
Brinleigh Arredondo had singles.
Goshen (17-25, 13-19 CL) is at Marian on Friday, April 25, at 3:00 pm. With the two losses, Goshen is unable to have a bye in the first round of the Crossroads League tournament.
