Adams and Mcleod step up as shorthanded Leafs lose at #14 Marian

Goshen will play in the league tournament on Tuesday at 4:00 pm

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Softball wrapped up the regular season with two losses at #14 Marian on Sunday. The Knights won 10-2 and 8-1 against the shorthanded Maple Leafs. Goshen will be a seven-seed in the Crossroads League tournament and will play on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.

Game One
With the doubleheader being moved multiple times due to weather, Goshen was without their six seniors, who instead had their commencement ceremony this afternoon. Marian still had starting pitcher Olivia Stunkel, who improved her pitching record to 23-0 this season with a win in game one. She allowed one earned run in five innings and is the only player in the NAIA with more than 20 wins with 25 or fewer appearances.

Goshen's runs off of Stunkel both came in the fourth inning. Rachel Kates reached first on an error to start the inning and then Ella Mcleod singled. After a flyout, Tatem Adams hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI single from Brineligh Arredondo. That cut Marian's lead to 4-2, but the home team put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth. With another run in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights won by run rule.

Camryn Barrows had the loss for Goshen. Seven of the ten runs she allowed were earned runs. She had three strikeouts. Sydney Lockhart hit a double for Goshen while Mcleod, Adams and Arredondo had singles.

Game Two
Marian put up a five-spot in the first inning of the next game. But Goshen starter Tatem Adams settled in and didn't give up any runs in the next two innings. She hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to score Ella Mcleod to make the score 5-1. Adams is currently on a six-game hitting streak - she had a seven-game hitting streak earlier in the season as well.

Goshen had nine hits in the game but only one run. Marian had nine hits as well but scored eight runs after adding three more in the fifth. Esme Pico pitched the last three innings for Goshen and gave up three earned runs on four hits.

Ella Mcleod hit three singles, scored a run and stole two bases in the game. This was her first time with three hits in a game since March 28, 2023 in a win at Indiana Wesleyan and the first time she's ever had two stolen bases in a game in her three years as a Maple Leaf. All nine of Goshen's hits were singles, with the others coming from Rachel Kates, Tatem Adams, Brinleigh Arredondo, Esme Pico, Chloe Roach and Tanae Smith. Roach made her third and fourth starts of the season and had her second hit of the year. This was Smith's first start and her first hit and at-bats of the year.

The Leafs will play at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, April 29, as the #7 seed in the league tournament. They will face either Taylor or Mount Vernon Nazarene. With a win, the Leafs are guaranteed to play at least two more games. If they lose that game, the season comes to an end.
