Leafs outscore Lancers 17-5 in doubleheader, extend win streak to three games

Goshen is 15-6-1 against Grace since 2019

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Goshen softball outscored Grace 17-5 in a pair of road wins on Thursday afternoon. Goshen is now 7-11 in league play and winners of three straight games after the 11-4 and 6-1 wins. Goshen has won four straight against the Lancers and holds a 15-6-1 record against them since 2019.

Game One
Goshen's first run came in the second inning as Kamille Badibanga walked with the bases loaded. Alyssa McDonald hit an RBI single in the top of the third to make it 2-0 and Shea VanScoter hit a two-run shot to center in the fifth.

Meanwhile, Grace Schmitt was throwing a gem in the circle. She hadn't allowed a run through the first five innings, and her offense was about to help her out even more. Goshen had a six-run sixth with five hits in the inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead, but the Lancers prevented the mercy rule win by scoring three in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams scored once in the seventh, Shea VanScoter threw the final innings, and the Leafs came out on top 11-4.

Both teams had 12 hits in the game, but Goshen did a better job at not leaving runners on base. Schmitt is now 3-4 this season with the win. She allowed three earned runs and ten hits in six innings pitched. Shea VanScoter was 3-4 with three runs and four RBIs. She had the home run and also a stolen base. VanScoter has two games with four RBIs this season and both came against the Lancers. It was her second time scoring three runs in a game this year.

Game Two
Just like game one, Grace was held scoreless for the first five innings. This time, it was Camryn Barrows putting in the work as Goshen's starter. Barrows allowed just two hits over the first five innings. Goshen didn't score for the first three, until some strategic fourth inning small ball put them on the board. Alyssa McDonald singled to start the inning and she moved to second on a stolen base. Brinleigh Arredondo hit a sacrifice bunt to move McDonald to third and a sac bunt squeeze from Carissa Fillingame scored her. In the fifth, an RBI single from Shea VanScoter made it 2-0.

Carissa Fillingame and Rachel Kates hit RBI singles in the fourth inning to double Goshen's lead. Grace scored once in the bottom of the inning, but the Leafs just answered back with a two-run homer from McDonald on the way to a 6-1 win.

Barrows threw a complete seven innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits. She had four strikeouts and two walks, throwing 94 total pitches. She has a 3-4 record this season and threw her second seven-inning game this season - the other also being against Grace.

McDonald was 3-3 with a home run, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. She also reached base after being hit by a pitch. VanScoter had a pair of singles and a stolen base. Fillingame had two RBIs.

Goshen (11-17, 7-11 CL) is at Marian on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 pm.
