EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Syanne Mohamed, a recent Goshen women's basketball alum who played for the Maple Leafs from 2021-2025, has now joined the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars women's basketball team, an NCAA Division-I school. Mohamed will earn her Master of Business Administration with a specialization in healthcare administration.
"My time at Goshen helped me grow both on and off the court," said Mohamed. "I developed a strong work ethic, leadership skills, and the ability to balance academics with athletics. The support from coaches, teammates, and professors really helped me build confidence and resilience - and those experiences have prepared me to take on new challenges and continue growing at SIUE."
Mohamed was Second Team All-Crossroads League in 2023-24 and Honorable Mention and All-Defensive Team this past season. She is 18th in program history in career points and is one of just 20 members of the 1,000-point club. She is fourth in the record book for career rebounds and second in blocks. Her 266 rebounds this past season is tied for the seventh-most by a player in a season in program history.
"Syanne will immediately contribute at SIUE, especially as their center," said Goshen women's basketball head coach
Tyra Carver. "She can guard bigs and she is mobile and agile enough to compete at the D-I level. Her competitiveness in every drill and every game will be the biggest strength she'll bring to the program. I am very excited to watch Syanne compete at the D-I level and I know she'll do great things."
SIU-Edwardsville competes in the Ohio Valley Conference and finished the 2024-25 season with a 6-23 record overall and 4-16 in the OVC. Head coach Samantha Quigley Smith, who scored 1,273 points as a player at DePaul from 2006-2011, will be starting her fifth season leading the program. Her sister Allie Quigley played at DePaul as well and was a three-time WNBA All-Star during her time with the Chicago Sky.
Mohamed noted that the balance between strong academics and a highly competitive D-I program is what stood out to her about SIUE. "From the start, the coaching staff made me feel welcomed and supported, and I could tell they value not just performance, but personal growth as well," she shared. "The outstanding facilities, vibrant campus community, and the opportunity to grow within a program that prioritizes both excellence and development made SIUE the perfect next step in my career."
