FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Women's soccer traveled to Fort Wayne to take on the University of Saint Francis Cougars. In their penultimate game of the season, the Maple Leafs fell 4-1.
The Cougars started fast, getting two shots off in the first five minutes, the first of which was saved by Amara Torrey, who was making her first start of her career. Torrey had another save in the 13th minute after a shot from Haylee Heflin. The Cougars broke the deadlock a minute later, when Evelyn Harkenrider found the back of the Leafs' net.
Eliana Lang got Goshen's first shot on the board, forcing a save out of Cougars shot-stopper, Zoe Eager. Seven minutes later, Lang played a give and go with Sophia Yoder and took a shot from way outside the box and found the back of the Cougar net in a beautiful ball over the keeper's head. This was Lang's first goal in conference play.
Both teams continued to test the other's goalkeeper. The Cougars forced Torrey into two more saves before halftime, and the sides went in even at the break.
It only took the Cougars nine minutes of the second half to regain the lead when Paige McCarley fired home. Nine minutes later, Faith Lewis found Hailey Stanforth, who increased the Cougar lead to 3-1.
Five minutes later, in the 69th minute, Nury Sibri Carmona found success off an assist from Alexis Leader to give the Cougars a three goal advantage.
The Cougars continued to press, forcing more saves out of Torrey, who had seven on the night. Despite their efforts, they couldn't find another goal and the game ended 4-1.
The Maple Leafs will conclude their season on Wednesday at the Goshen College Soccer Complex against the Spring Arbor Cougars. Kick off is set for 6 p.m.
