Corey shatters career high kills in four set battle with Saint Francis

Quinones also tied her career high aces and digs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Women's volleyball was on the road for a final time to take on the Cougars of Saint Francis — they close out the season with two home matches. While the Maple Leafs came out strong and won the first set, they fell after four sets, 3-1. The final scores were 25-19, 25-27, 18-25, 16-25.

The first set was fairly evenly matched to start things off, but after a key 4-0 run to put the Leafs up 10-5 that included an ace from Carmin Corey, they never looked back. This set also included another ace from Corey, as well as one from Lila Quinones.

The second set never saw this break away moment for either team, and the scores remained neck and neck right up to 24-24. This set also saw another two aces from Quinones, tying her career high in a match of three. In the end, an attacking error off the Cougars block put the Cougars back in the match, and would eventually lead them to the win.

The wind dropped a bit out of the sails for the Leafs in the third set, as the Cougars went on a 6-0 run early in the set that set the precedent for their lead for the rest of the points. Though the Leafs were still scoring, they just couldn't quite string together the series of points needed to get back in striking distance.

The fourth and final set saw similar play to the third — the Leafs stayed close early on, but after a 7-0 run from the Cougars they couldn't get back in the match. This set was where Corey picked up her third ace of the match, which makes this her fourth career match with 3+ , all of which have come in the last month.

Corey also picked up 16 kills in the match, making her the kill leader for both teams, and creating a new career high for the sophomore. This was also her third game with 14+ kills in the last two weeks, after having only reached that level once in her first 52 games. She also tied her career high digs in this match with 15.

Ava Schneider followed Corey in kills with 11, which ties the second most of her career. She also hit a strong .389 on the night.

The Maple Leafs are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 31 for their Senior Night matchup against #13 Grace. First serve is set for 11 a.m. in the Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
