SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. - The Goshen men's volleyball team finished 3-1 at the Showdown in the Woods after back-to-back sweeps on the second day of the event. Goshen won against Soka University of America 25-22, 25-11, 25-13 before defeating Rockford 25-15, 25-11, 26-24.

Soka never held a lead in the first set. When they got within two at 24-22, it was the closest they had been since being down 4-2. A kill from Goshen's
Gavin Furgerson ended the set on the next point, however. The Leafs ended the second set on a 14-4 run and scored the final five points to win it 25-11. A couple of back-to-back aces in the middle of the third set from
Mathis Doladille made it 16-6 in favor of Goshen on the way to a 25-13 win in the third set.
Goshen had a balanced attack with seven kills from
Gavin Furgerson, six from
Bruno Barac and five from
Adrian Candia.
Nash Hubick had 16 assists and
Avery Laforce had nine.
Ben Koop and
Mathis Doladille each had three aces.
Andrea Biffi led the way with 12 digs.
Goshen vs Rockford
The Leafs had a .476 hitting percentage in the first set of their second match and had four separate 4-0 runs to win it 25-15. They started the second set on a 12-2 run and finished it by scoring the final five points. A
Sawyer Frystak ace for the final point made it 25-11. Rockford put up a fight in the third and scored after one Goshen match point but the Leafs recovered with two straight points and won 26-24.
Sawyer Frystak had 13 kills and
Ishmail Bangura added ten more.
Igor Sapucaia had 28 assists while
Andrea Biffi and
Ben Koop each had nine digs.
Goshen (4-5) hosts Bethel, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, on Tuesday, February 3, at 7:00 pm.
