Goshen grabs opening set before Bethel rallies for 3-1 win

The Pilots hadn't lost a set yet this season

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen faced Bethel in men's volleyball on Tuesday night, with the all-time series between the two schools tied 3-3. The Leafs won the first set but the Pilots took the next three, winning 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.

Bethel came into the match undefeated at 2-0 and hadn't lost a set yet. The Leafs won the first four points of the match and the Pilots never took a lead in the set. Goshen's lead expanded to as many as seven points before winning the set by six. The Leafs had a .409 hitting percentage in the set whereas Bethel was at .048.

The Pilots' first lead of the match came at 8-7 in the second. They held the edge for the remainder of the set even though GC was within two late in the set at 22-20. Goshen never had a lead in the third. The teams were tied 13-13 when the visitors ended it on a 12-5 run. The only Maple Leafs lead in the fourth set was at 2-1. The Pilots scored five in a row after that and never looked back, winning the match 3-1.

Ben Koop had 11 kills and six digs and Ishmail Bangura had ten kills and nine digs. Igor Sapucaia had 32 assists and three block assists. Ryan Kabrich had two of Goshen's four aces. Bangura and Sawyer Frystak each had a solo block.

Goshen is now 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the WHAC. The Leafs face Mount Vernon Nazarene at home on Friday, February 6, at 7:00 pm.
