Northern scores 26 but Cougars pull away late in Spring Arbor

Goshen’s last two games have been their lowest turnover performances of the season

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Goshen men's basketball team was within two with under four minutes to go, but Spring Arbor ended on a 10-2 run to win 75-65 on the Crossroads League's Jesus Won Day. Marcus Northern had 26 points and seven rebounds for the Leafs and went 6-8 from three.

The Maple Leafs led for 32% of the game and had a lead as large as seven points, but most of that came in the first half. Goshen started with a 14-7 lead over the first six and a half minutes. Spring Arbor had a 7-0 run later in the half and the teams were tied 35-35 at the half.

Goshen had a slight advantage to begin the second half, but their last lead came at 42-41 with 16:19 to go. The Cougars went on a 16-4 run at that point to go up by 13, their largest lead of the game. GC chipped away with an 18-7 run to pull within two at 65-63. Down five with just under two minutes to go, Marcus Northern had a shot that just rimmed out and the Cougars scored to increase the lead to seven on the next possession. Braden Allen grabbed a steal with just over a minute left, but narrowly missed the shot in transition to keep it at a seven-point game. SAU made five free-throws after that and came away with a ten point win.

Northern was the star performer with 26 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and no turnovers. He was 6-8 from three and 10-19 overall. Caleb Thompson had eight points, going 2-3 from three and 3-4 shooting overall. The Leafs only had seven turnovers - tied for their lowest amount in a game since facing Spring Arbor exactly two years ago to the day. Goshen's last two games have been their lowest turnover performances of the season. Kamren Williams and Saiveon Williams had five rebounds each. Kamren Williams also had six points, five assists, three blocks and two steals. He also fouled out and had five of Goshen's seven turnovers.

Jesus Won Day is a league-wide initiative to share with the world why and how Jesus has won in our lives. Players, staff and fans of both team wore shirts saying "Jesus Won" on the front in their team colors.

Goshen hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday, February 18 for Senior Night. Jacob Carlson, Jacob Eyler, JP Jabbour and Saiveon Williams will be the seniors recognized for Goshen.
