GOSHEN, Ind. - Five different Maple Leafs had an ace in Goshen's three-set loss to Cornerstone, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll. The Golden Eagles made strides as the night went on, winning 26-24, 25-19, 25-17.
Goshen won the first four points of the match and doubled Cornerstone's score at 14-7. At that point, the Golden Eagles rattled off eight points in a row to go up 15-14. Goshen had two-point leads at 23-21 and at set point at 24-22, but Cornerstone connected on four straight kills to win the set 26-24.
In the next set, it was the visitors with the fast start, going up 5-1. After that, Goshen was never closer than two points and Cornerstone won 25-19. Goshen's hitting percentage improved greatly from .025 to .269, but the same was true for Cornerstone, going from .140 to .435. Goshen led early in the final set at 4-2, but the Golden Eagles used a 6-0 run and didn't turn back. Another 6-0 run later in the set put them up 24-14 and they eventually won 25-17 after a late rally from the Leafs.
Goshen led in aces 6-4.
Ishmail Bangura had two, and
Sawyer Frystak,
Alessandro Olgiati,
Mathis Doladille and
Ben Koop each had one. Koop had ten kills, a .350 hitting percentage, two block assists and a solo block to go with his ace. Doladille had two solo blocks and two block assists - his first match with at least two of each as a Maple Leaf.
Andrea Biffi led the defense with seven digs and
Nash Hubick guided the offense with 23 assists.
