WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Men's basketball nearly pulled off a historic upset on the road at #2 Grace. Six Maple Leafs scored in double figures but the Lancers held on to win 86-84 and clinched their fourth straight regular season Crossroads League title.
Goshen led 8-4 early on and was down 43-40 at the half. While the Lancers were shooting 57% in the first 20 minutes and leading in rebounds 26-9, the Maple Leafs had only committed one turnover compared to nine for Grace. Goshen scored 14 points off of turnovers while Grace had none from Goshen turnovers. The Leafs were shooting a solid 46% and made seven threes compared to two for Grace.
The Lancers started the second half on a 15-5 run to go up 13 points with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Yet just as the women's team pulled within one point after being down 23 in their game just hours earlier, the men made theirs a one-point game as well.
Goshen was down six after two made free-throws for the Lancers with under two minutes to go.
Saiveon Williams made a layup on a pass from
Kamren Williams on the next possession, and he blocked Michael Wellman, his fourth block of the day, on Grace's next possession. Neither team capitalized on their next possessions and
Jacob Carlson stole the ball and
Braden Allen was fouled with 40 seconds to go. Allen made both shots to put Goshen down 82-80.
Saiveon Williams had his fifth block on the next Lancers possession and
Kamren Williams was fouled with 15 seconds to go. He made the first shot, but the second attempt hit off the front of the rim. The ball was up for grabs for a moment, eventually making its way back towards Williams' direction, but Grace came up with it and made two free-throws at the other end.
The Lancers were up three when they fouled
Marcus Northern, who made both shots to make it a one-point game again with ten seconds to go. Grace went 2-2 at the line, and it was back to a three-point difference with seven seconds left. Grace fouled again to send
Jacob Carlson to the line. After making the first, he intentionally missed the second but the Lancers came up with it and won by two.
The Leafs had extremely balanced production with six players in double figures.
Saiveon Williams finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, five blocks and two steals. He was 4-6 from the field including 2-2 from deep.
Braden Allen had 15 points on 4-5 shooting, going 3-4 from three and 4-4 at the line. He had three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
Marcus Northern was held scoreless for a long time, but finished with 11 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Kamren Williams was 3-5 from three and finished with 14 points and four rebounds.
Kevin Cota and
Jacob Carlson each had ten points as well.
All of Goshen's six blocks, with five from
Saiveon Williams, came in the second half. The Leafs still finished with six fewer turnovers than Grace but also had 16 fewer rebounds. Goshen made 11 three-pointers compared to four for Grace.
Goshen finished the season 9-19 with two separate three-game win streaks, a 7-3 nonconference record, a win over #24 Taylor, a two-point loss to #2 Grace and an overtime loss to #11 Indiana Wesleyan.
