WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Ava Egolf scored a career-high as Goshen's frantic comeback came up just short against the Lancers on Saturday afternoon. Grace was outscored 23-9 in the fourth quarter but held on to win 86-82.
Goshen went up 6-0 just 45 seconds into the game, but Grace had a 12-0 run later in the quarter and was up by 17 as they went into the second - doubling Goshen's score at 34-17. The Leafs only let the lead grow to 18 by halftime and it stayed at that margin by the fourth quarter.
The Maple Leafs were still down 80-63 with less than eight minutes to go when they went on a 9-0 run thanks to a jumper from
Ava Egolf, a fastbreak layup and a pair of free throws from
Zy'Ann Phinezy and a three by
Paulecia Isom. The Lefas weren't rattled after a Grace three by Maddy Poynter, as they went on another 10-0 run. Egolf,
Kyla Foster,
Lillian Null, Isom and Phinezy all scored during that stretch - part of a larger 19-3 run for Goshen.
Now down one with 33 seconds to go, Goshen attempted to cause what would have been a seventh turnover in the quarter for Grace, but was unable to do so. Isom fouled with ten seconds to go and Poynter made two free-throws to take a three-point lead. A turnover on Goshen's next possession just about sealed it. Poynter went 1-2 at the line the next time around and the Lancers won by four.
Egolf had a career-high 26 points for the Leafs. She was 13-25 from the field with seven rebounds and only one turnover in 33 minutes. Phinezy scored 20 points with four assists, two steals and a block. Isom had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Carrie Hiler had nine points and
Kyla Foster had ten rebounds, four assists and two steals in her final game at Goshen. Senior
Lillian Null had six points and four boards.
Goshen finishes the season with a 4-24 record, including a conference win over Taylor, who was receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll at the time of the win.
