Maple Leafs come back to tie but fall 10-8 in Kentucky

A three-run homer from Chase Smith helped tie the game at 6-6

COLUMBIA, Ky. - A four-run fifth inning and a late push in the ninth wasn't enough as the Maple Leafs lost to Lindsey Wilson in a single nine-inning game on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Raiders won 10-8.

Lindsey Wilson had the bases loaded with one out in the first inning after a walk, a single, and a batter who was hit by a pitch. Another hit batter led to the first run of the game and a fielder's choice led to the second. In the next inning, Goshen got on the board as Jackson Whittington walked with the bases loaded. The Leafs left the bases loaded after two strikeouts and the Blue Raiders had back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning.

After a scoreless third for both teams, Whittington hit an RBI groundout in the fourth to score AJ Carrasquillo, who had reached on an error. Lindsey Wilson had two more runs in the fourth and their lead was extended to 6-2. In the top of the fifth, the Maple Leafs had a little bit of everything to tie the game 6-6.

Troy Griffin singled down the left field line with one out and Aidan Calvey walked. Dylan Pearson reached base on an error and Carrasquillo hit a sac fly to score Griffin. Next, Chase Smith hit a three-run homer to tie it up 6-6. The Blue Raiders responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and held the Leafs scoreless for three consecutive innings. In the eighth, they added two solo home runs to go up 10-6.

Nick Padron and Chris Godden started the ninth with back-to-back singles and Troy Griffin reached on an error as Padron scored. With two outs, Carrasquillo singled through the right side of the infield to score Godden and made the score 10-8. Smith walked and loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the game and resulted in a two-run win for the Blue Raiders.

Logan Wilson allowed four earned runs with three strikeouts in three innings as the starter. Lance Wilson allowed four as well in 4.1 innings. Aaron Matthews allowed one in the two thirds of an inning he pitched. Smith went 2-2 with a home run, three RBIs, a run, two walks, a stolen base and he was hit by a pitch. Carrasquillo had two runs and two RBIs and Whittington added two RBIs too. Andres Duran had three hits for Lindsey Wilson. The Leafs had five errors and the Blue Raiders had four.

The teams play a single nine-inning game on Monday at 1:00 pm eastern.
