Barrows and Pico pitch strong as Leafs split with OCU in Florida

Barrows had no earned runs in seven innings in the game one win

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Goshen split a doubleheader with Oakland City on the first day of the Space Coast Spring Games. The Maple Leafs won the first game 5-3 while the Mighty Oaks took game two.

Game One
Camryn Barrows threw a dominant seven innings in game one. She allowed three runs but none of them were earned. She gave up just three hits and struck out nine while walking two.

The Goshen offense started off strong. Bianca Diamond, the first batter of Goshen's season, doubled to center field and later advanced to third on a passed ball during Audrey White's at-bat. White singled through the right side, scoring Diamond and making it a 1-0 game. In the second inning, Barrow helped her own cause by hitting a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch. She moved over to third on a flyout and scored on a sac fly from Rachel Kates.

The score was still 2-0 in the middle of the fifth - Barrows hadn't allowed a hit since the lead-off batter of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, freshman Hayden McGuire doubled and Kates came up next and singled to score McGuire. Kates scored a couple batters later on an RBI single from Bianca Diamond. White had an RBI single later in the inning that brought Diamond home and made it 5-0.

Through six, Barrows had still just allowed one hit, but the Mighty Oaks made things interesting in the seventh inning. Their first hitter reached on an error and then the next two were both out on flyouts, though the first unearned run scored. What came next was a single, a hit by pitch, and a two-RBI triple. A groundout ended the inning and the Leafs won their season opener 5-3.

Diamond, White and Barrows each had two hits for the Maple Leafs. Diamond had one extra-base hit, two runs and a stolen base. White, a transfer from Mount San Antonio College, had two RBIs, as did Kates.

Game Two
Like the first game, Bianca Diamond started the first inning with a hit - a single. After a throwing error by the right fielder, she made it to third, and scored when Brinleigh Arredondo hit an RBI groundout. Goshen scored two more in the third. Audrey White hit an RBI single to score Ella Mcleod, who reached on a single of her own and moved around the bases after a passed ball and then a wild pitch. White scored later in the inning on an RBI single from Rachel Kates.

Esme Pico, Goshen's starter, threw a strong five innings where she didn't allow any earned runs. The one run that scored on her watch came in the fourth after an error on Diamond in center field. She allowed four hits during her time in the circle with three strikeouts and three walks.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Leafs made a pitching change with Shay Pipher coming into the game. The Mighty Oaks, at the same time, got into an offensive rhythm. After a quick out, Oakland City had a solo home run, a single, an RBI double, a walk, and then back-to-back RBI singles before a double play groundout ended the inning. By this point OCU had the lead, and Goshen had three flyouts to the outfield in the top of the seventh that ended the game.

Goshen is 4-2 all-time against Oakland City, with all six matchups at the Space Coast Spring Games. Pipher had the loss for GC. Audrey White had two of Goshen's six hits. She scored a run and had an RBI and a stolen base. Diamond, Kates, McGuire and Mcleod had Goshen's remaining hits - all singles.

On Tuesday, Goshen faces St. Thomas (Fla.) at 2:30 pm and Fort Lauderdale at 4:45 pm.
