MELBOURNE, Fla. - Camryn Barrows is putting on a clinic down in Florida. After St. Thomas beat the Leafs 7-2, Barrows threw a complete game win for the second day in a row as Goshen beat Fort Lauderdale 4-0. Barrows had 15 strikeouts and no walks in the win and is the only NAIA player averaging 12 or more strikeouts per seven innings with at least five innings pitched. She has thrown 14 innings so far this season.
Barrows' 15 strikeouts is the most by the Maple Leafs in a game, by one pitcher or the entire team, since at least 2007.
Game One
St. Thomas moved to 11-1 with their win over Goshen. They were on the board quickly in the first with four runs that came from a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single. Then in the bottom of the second,
Sydney Lockhart hit an RBI single to score
Ella Mcleod, who led off the inning with a triple to right field. The 4-1 lead extended to 7-1 after back-to-back RBI singles and a sac fly that came later in the inning. Four of the Bobcats' nine hits in the game came in the third inning.
Goshen starter
Shay Pipher was taken out after 2.1 innings as she continued to get more experience in the circle.
Tatem Adams came in and allowed no earned runs on just one hit in 4.2 innings to keep Goshen alive. She had three strikeouts and allowed two walks. The Goshen offense wasn't able to help her out, though, until the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Audrey White singled to short to score
Serenidy Mitchem to make it 7-2. A pop up on the next at-bat ended the game, and St. Thomas won by five.
Rachel Kates had three of Goshen's eight hits in the game as well as the team's lone stolen base. Pipher took the loss.
Game Two
The next game was a 4-0 shutout, moving Goshen to 3-1 all-time against Fort Lauderdale with all three wins being shutouts.
Camryn Barrows was dominant for a second straight night. Even more dominant than her nine strikeout, no earned run, complete game performance on Monday. This time around, the junior threw 15 strikeouts and gave up no walks in a near flawless display. She allowed just two hits and no earned runs on the way to her second victory of the season. Barrows is the only pitcher in the NAIA averaging 12 or more strikeouts per seven innings with a minimum of five innings pitched. She has maintained that average through 14 innings. She is also the only NAIA pitcher with an ERA of 0.00, at least 14 innings pitched and at least 13 strikeouts. She is sitting at 24 strikeouts already this season after having 57 all of last season.
Offensively, it took a while to get going for GC. They left a runner on in the second and third innings before Barrows tripled to left field to begin the fourth.
Audrey White singled next to score Barrows and make it 1-0. Later in the inning,
Kaylee Kline fouled out, and after a throwing error, White was able to score. The lead grew to three in the fifth as
Rachel Kates hit an RBI single to score
Bianca Diamond and
Ella Mcleod hit an RBI single in the sixth to score White.
Barrows came out again in the top of the seventh and ended the Eagles with three consecutive swinging strikeouts. Barrows needed just 81 pitches to get the win. Diamond and White had two hits each for the Leafs and
Hayden McGuire had a double and two walks. White scored twice and had two stolen bases and an RBI.
On Wednesday, Goshen faces Oakland City at 10:00 am and Fort Lauderdale at 2:30 pm.
