GC falls twice to Columbia International at Space Coast Games

Barrows streak ends at 16.1 innings with no earned runs to start the year

GOSHEN, Ind. - Columbia International moved to 12-2 this season with two wins over Goshen in the Space Coast Spring Games. The Rams won the first game 3-1 and the second game 9-3.

Game One
The Rams and Maple Leafs were scoreless through the first three innings of game one. The closest chance came in the bottom of the first when Goshen had runners at second and third but ended the inning on a strikeout. In the top of the fourth, after two singles and a hit batter, CIU scored on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. The next batter hit a two-RBI single to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Bianca Diamond started off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right, and with two outs in the inning she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Audrey White then doubled to left to score Diamond, and it was 3-1. Goshen outhit Columbia International 8-6 and had one more walk, but couldn't convert the baserunners to runs as successfully.

Shay Pipher threw all seven innings in the loss. She allowed three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Rachel Kates was 2-4 and Audrey White went 1-3 with the RBI double. Bianca Diamond, Brinleigh Arredondo, Sydney Lockhart, Tatem Adams and Ella Mcleod all had singles for the Leafs.

Game Two
Camryn Barrows was the game two starter, and she also started off the Goshen offense. In the top of the second, Barrows hit a single to center with Hayden McGuire already on base after a single of her own. However, an error by the CIU center field resulted in McGuire scoring and Barrows heading to third. Kaylee Kline singled to score Barrows and it was 2-0 in favor of the Leafs.

Brinleigh Arredondo hit an RBI double to score Kaylee Kates in the third and the Rams answered with an RBI double of their own in the bottom half of the inning. This ended Barrows' streak of consecutive innings to start the season without allowing an earned run at 16.1 innings. Barrows went three innings, allowing one earned run and three hits. She had five strikeouts and two walks. Barrows has an ERA of 0.41 through 17.0 innings this season. She is the only pitcher in the NAIA with a strikeout per seven innings rate of at least 11.50 with over 12 innings pitched.

The score stayed 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Columbia International scored two runs on three hits. In the sixth, they added six runs on four hits. Sophia Noriega-Mora reached on a fielder's choice. Lilli Petty was out at home on the play, but catcher Kaylee Kline made a throwing error and the three remaining baserunners all scored to make it 9-3. A groundout ended the inning, but Goshen couldn't make the comeback in the top of the seventh and lost by six.

Esme Pico had the loss and is now 1-1 this season. In three innings she allowed five earned runs. Brinleigh Arredondo had the RBI double and Rachel Kates, Hayden McGuire, Camryn Barrows and Kaylee Kline all had singles. Bianca Diamond walked twice.

Goshen is off on Friday before playing their final two games in Florida on Saturday. They'll face Calumet College of St. Joseph at 10:00 am and Judson at 12:15 pm.
