Goshen drops first games of Crossroads League season at Spring Arbor

AJ Lenn delivers career-long outing while Griffin scores three times in narrow game one loss

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Goshen baseball lost their first two games in the Crossroads League portion of the 2026 schedule on Friday afternoon. GC overcame a four-run deficit in game one to tie it up 6-6 before Spring Arbor went on to win 7-6. The Cougars were more dominant in the 8-0 win in game two.

Game One
Four of Goshen's six runs in the game were unearned, capitalizing on three Spring Arbor errors. And while the Leafs overcame a four-run deficit to tie it up, the Cougars had a late run to put them over the top.

With runners at first and second, Chase Smith reached base on a fielding error by the Spring Arbor third baseman. AJ Carrasquillo hit a sac fly, what should have been the third out of the inning, and Troy Griffin scored on the play. Dylan Pearson walked, and Aidan Calvey scored - as the fourth ball was a wild pitch. Goshen led 2-0 but the Cougars scored two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the first. Brenden Phillips hit a two-RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. In the second, SAU added two more runs on an RBI double and a sac fly.

Goshen starter AJ Lenn settled in after the first two innings. He had a quick 1-2-3 inning in the third and held Spring Arbor scoreless from the third through the sixth inning. Offensively, the Maple Leafs narrowed the gap by a run in the fifth as Troy Griffin stole home while Aidan Calvey stole second in a double steal. The Cougars started the bottom of the seventh with a walk and then a triple to go up 5-3. A balk resulted in their sixth run, and AJ Lenn was taken out of the game not long after. Brandon Wright Barron came in and got out of the inning with no more runs coming through.

In the top of the eighth, Goshen came back to tie it after taking advantage of two errors in the inning. Troy Griffin walked, followed by singles from Aidan Calvey and Chase Smith. Dylan Pearson got on base after an error and Griffin scored. Fernando Marte Santana came in to pinch hit and also reached on an error, scoring Calvey. Barron Welsh then hit an RBI single and Smith scored to tie the game at 6-6. A strikeout and a popup left the bases loaded.

Wright Barron got two early outs in the bottom of the eight, but a double for Connor Reed, followed by a wild pitch, put the go-ahead runner at third base. An RBI single scored Reed and the Cougars went up 7-6. The Leafs stranded one runner in the ninth and SAU held on to win by one.

AJ Lenn went 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and eight hits. He had two strikeouts and two walks. This was the longest pitching outing in his collegiate career by two innings. Brandon Wright Barron allowed one earned in 1.2 innings. He had two strikeouts, a walk and two hits allowed.

Aidan Calvey and Barron Welsh had two hits each. Troy Griffin scored three runs and walked three times. He had two of Goshen's three stolen bases, with Calvey providing the other.

Game Two
Goshen didn't record their first hit in game two until the sixth inning - a single from Nick Padron up the middle. Joel Berkholz had a single later in the same inning, but those were the only two for the Leafs.

Spring Arbor scored at least one run in the first four innings. They had just five hits, and all of them were singles, but they walked seven times, were hit by pitches four times and stole five bases. Goshen had six errors, which resulted in half of Spring Arbor's runs being unearned.

Dylan Pearson had the loss on the mound, allowing two earned runs and six total runs on four hits in four innings. Robby Dillard and Adam Traylor each allowed one earned run, and each threw one inning of work. Padron and Berkholz were both 1-2 and Chris Godden had two walks.

The teams are at Spring Arbor for a 1:00 pm start again on Saturday as well. The games were moved from being played in Goshen due to field conditions.
