SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Goshen played as the home team on the scoreboard in a pair of games at Spring Arbor that were moved from Goshen due to field conditions. The Cougars won the games 3-1 and 15-1.
Game One
Lance Wilson only allowed two runs to come through, and only one earned run in 5.1 innings, but the Goshen offense couldn't provide enough run support in the 3-1 loss. With two outs in the top of the third, Spring Arbor scored the first run on a bunt single that brought in Nate Dutkowski after a throwing error by
Lance Wilson. The Leafs answered in the bottom of the fifth as
Troy Griffin hit an RBI single to score
Braxton Nagy. The second Cougars run came after a fielder's choice in the sixth. Wilson was taken out of the game shortly after. While he didn't have any strikeouts, he allowed just one walk and one earned run.
Corey Brown came in and got out of the inning.
SAU scored once more in the top of the eighth from a walk with the bases loaded. A double play with one out in the bottom of the ninth ended Goshen's chances of coming back and the Cougars won 3-1.Â
Brown allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief.
Kenny Ayala pitched the final 1.1 innings without giving up an earned run or a hit. He had one strikeout and no walks. The Maple Leafs had six hits and
Joey Paternostro had three of them. The right fielder went 3-4 - his first three hits of the season. He had 13 hits heading into this game and also had a three-hit game at Grace on March 30, 2024.
Jackson Whittington,
Troy Griffin and
Barron Welsh all had singles as well.
Game Two
The second game was within reach in the first half, but SAU came through in the last few innings of the seven-inning game.Â
The Cougars led 2-0 through four innings - scoring on an RBI groundout in the second and a sac fly in the third. One more earned run was credited to GC starter
Logan Wilson before he was taken out of the game after 4.1 innings. SAU finished with three runs in the fifth before adding eight in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth,
Troy Griffin started off with a triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch. Spring Arbor added two more runs in the seventh and won 15-1.
