Paternostro homers and Whittington breaks out on offense as Goshen falls twice to Marian

Paternostro belts first collegiate homer; Whittington tallies three hits in game two

GOSHEN, Ind. - In their first games at "Sarge" Yoder Baseball Field this season, Goshen lost twice to Marian, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll. The Knights won 30-2 and 14-5. Monday's games will now start at noon instead of 1:00 pm.

Game One
Marian scored one or fewer runs in four of the seven innings in game one, which was run ruled. They had three innings where they scored seven runs or more, though.

Goshen led first when AJ Carrasquillo hit an RBI single, scoring Aidan Calvey in the bottom of the first. Though Marian's first three batters got out in the top of the first, the Knights scored eight runs on seven hits in the second inning alone. In the bottom of the second, Barron Welsh scored on a throwing error while Chris Godden stole second.

Marian added seven runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and then 14 in the sixth inning. They finished with 30 runs, 19 hits, 13 walks and had five batters hit by pitches.

Dylan Pearson had the loss for Goshen, going two innings while allowing eight earned runs on seven hits. AJ Carrasquillo went 2-3 with a single, a double and an RBI. Troy Griffin and Chris Godden each hit singles.

Game Two
Marian was up 5-0 when Goshen got on the board in the bottom of the second in game two. Joey Paternostro homered to right, his first home run as a Maple Leaf, to make it 5-1. The Knights scored two in the third and one in the fourth before Chris Godden walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-2.

The Leafs made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth. Fernando Marte Santana reached first on a dropped fly out in centerfield and AJ Carrasquillo singled through the right side to send Marte Santana to third. Then, Nick Padron reached on a fielder's choice, but a throwing error allowed Marte Santana to score. Joey Paternostro was up next and hit a sac fly, scoring Carrasquillo and making it 8-4.

The score stayed the same until the top of the seventh, when Marian added six more runs. GC scored once more when Paternostro hit an RBI single to score Padron, but the Knights still won 14-5.

Paternostro went 2-2 with two runs, three RBIs, the home run and a walk. Jackson Whittington hit three singles, finishing 3-4. He had two hits in the previous eight games he had played this season, and seven through his collegiate career before this game. Padron had a double and Carrasquillo added a single. AJ Lenn had the loss on the mound, allowing six earned in three innings. Zak Henrich allowed no earned runs or walks in an inning of work.

Goshen and Marian face off again on Monday, with the start time being bumped up from 1:00 pm to noon.
