GOSHEN, Ind. - Ryan Kabrich set a program record with 11 blocks in a match and the team tied a record for 16 blocks in a match as Goshen faced Mount Vernon Nazarene at home on Friday evening. Goshen nearly pulled off the reverse sweep, forcing a fifth set after losing the first two, but the Cougars won 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-10.
Both teams were blocking the ball well from the start, but Goshen adjusted to Mount Vernon's defense as the match went on. Three of Goshen's first four points came from blocks.
Ryan Kabrich was involved in all three,
Sawyer Frystak in two and
Ben Koop in one. MVNU built up an 18-9 lead but a 10-1 run later in the set resulted in the teams tied 24-24. A couple of kills later, the Cougars left with a one-set lead.
Mount Vernon led by six on multiple occasions in the second set, but Goshen rallied and had five points in a row at one point to tie it 20-20. The Cougars scored five of the next seven to win it 25-22. Neither team scored more than four points in a row in the third as Goshen won 25-22 this time around. In the fourth set, five of Goshen's last six points came on blocks.
Ryan Kabrich and
Ishmail Bangura had block assists on four of them and the other was a solo block from Kabrich.
Goshen never held a lead in the first set and was playing from behind, though not by much. MVNU scored four of the last five points to win the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
The previous program record for blocks in a match was nine by
Bruno Barac, doing so on February 24, 2024 against Lawrence Tech and March 15, 2024 against Lourdes. Kabrich finished tonight with ten block assists and one solo block. He had three in the first set, two in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth. The team total of 16 blocks ties the record set on February 9, 2021, also against MVNU, and tied on February 12, 2022 at Judson.
Goshen was looking for their fourth reverse sweep in program history. They are 3-8 in fifth sets where that is possible.
Ishmail Bangura had a season-high 13 kills, his sixth match in a row in double figures for kills.
Alessandro Olgiati had 11 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. He has double-digit kills in three career games - all against Nazarene schools - one against Olivet Nazarene and two against Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Nash Hubick had a season-high 40 assists and
Mathis Doladille posted a season-high ten kills with a .600 hitting percentage. Bangura and Hubick had eight digs each.
