Maple Leafs open 2026 season against Union Commonwealth

Pearson had a home run and four RBIs in game two

CORBIN, Ky. - The 2026 Goshen Maple Leafs baseball season got underway on Sunday afternoon in Kentucky against Union Commonwealth. The Bulldogs won game one 5-2 and game two 10-5.

Game One
The Maple Leafs started strong by scoring two unearned runs in the top of the first. With Chris Godden on second base and two outs after a walk and a stolen base, Dylan Pearson reached first on a fielding error by the Union Commonwealth shortstop and Godden moved to third. AJ Carrasquillo was up next, and his single to right center scored Godden and sent Pearson to third. Troy Griffin came up next and singled to score Pearson and the Leafs led 2-0.

Union quickly got three hits in the bottom of the first - a double, a single and then an RBI single from the first three batters. Goshen starting pitcher Lance Wilson then got the next three batters out with two runners in scoring position with a popup, groundout and another popup.

The Bulldogs had a home run in the bottom of the third and then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, had no hits after the first inning, leaving two runners on base in that span. Cristian Bajjalieha and Jayden Lochiatto combined to throw four scoreless innings for Union Commonwealth as they won 5-2. The Leafs had ten strikeouts and walked four times.

Lance Wilson went 4.1 innings with four earned runs and eight hits. He had three strikeouts and one walk allowed. AJ Lenn threw 1.1 innings in relief, not allowing any hits, walks or runs. Chris Godden and Dylan Pearson each had a single and a walk for GC. All eight Bulldogs' hits came from the top four in the lineup - they combined to go 8-12.

Game Two
Just like game one, Goshen scored multiple runs in the first inning in game two. After Chase Smith and Aidan Calvey both walked, Dylan Pearson hit a three-run home run to left center to make it 3-0. The home run ended up being Goshen's only hit in the game. The Bulldogs had a two-run home run in the second and took the lead in the third after a run scored on a throwing error, a two-run home run and an RBI triple. The score was 7-3 after a walk with the bases loaded in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Goshen had the bases loaded after three walks to Nick Padron, Chris Godden and Aidan Calvey. Pearson fouled out to right field, but he got the RBI as Padron was able to score from third. AJ Carrasquillo walked, and once Troy Griffin was hit by a pitch, Godden scored to cut the lead to two at 7-5. Union Commonwealth scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run and a run after a wild pitch to make the score 10-5. Both teams were scoreless in the next inning and a half and the Bulldogs went 2-0 for the day.

The Bulldogs had nine total hits from eight different players. Dylan Pearson finished the day 1-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Troy Griffin had an RBI and Aidan Calvey walked three times. The Leafs walked ten times and struck out 13 times. Logan Wilson allowed five earned runs on six hits in four innings pitched. Adam Traylor didn't allow any walks in an inning of relief and Yancik Loiselles got out of a jam and didn't allow any runs in his inning of work.

The teams face off again on Monday at 10:00 am.
