GOSHEN, Ind. - Despite scoring their most runs in a game so far this season in game one, the GC baseball teams lost a pair of games to Bethel on Friday. The Pilots won 21-12 and 15-5.
Game One
Goshen led 3-2 after two innings with RBI singles from
AJ Carrasquillo and
Barron Welsh. In the bottom of the fifth, Carrasquillo hit another RBI single and
Dylan Pearson hit a sac fly to right to make it 6-5 in favor of the Leafs. Bethel had a big five-run sixth inning, one run in the seventh, six in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
The Leafs scored six more runs in the final three innings, but not enough at the rate the Pilots were going.
Nathan Pinedo and
Barron Welsh contributed RBI singles in the seventh and Welsh had a sac fly in the eighth as well. Also in the eighth, Pearson hit an RBI single and
Joel Berkholz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Aidan Calvey had a sac fly in the ninth. Goshen had three sacrifice flies in the game - the most they have had in a game since March 24, 2021 against Siena Heights.
AJ Lenn had the loss, allowing five earned runs in three innings.
AJ Carrasquillo went 3-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Fernando Marte Santana,
Dylan Pearson,
Nathan Pinedo and
Barron Welsh had two hits apiece. Welsh ended up with four RBIs. Goshen's 14 hits ties their most in a game since March 15, 2024 against Indiana Wesleyan in an 8-2 win.
Game Two
Similar to game one, the Pilots broke through in the last few innings. Bethel led 3-2 after the first - Goshen scored on an RBI single from
AJ Carrasquillo and a sacrifice fly from
Jackson Whittington. Bethel scored ten straight runs and led 13-2 in the middle of the sixth.
Joel Berkholz and
Barron Welsh added RBI singles for the Leafs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-4.
Troy Griffin scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pilots made the short trip back to Mishawaka with a 15-5 win. BU had 18 hits and no errors.
Goshen starter
Kenny Ayala had the loss, allowing four earned runs in two innings pitched.
Fernando Marte Santana had three of Goshen's eight hits - a double and two singles.
Troy Griffin scored two of Goshen's runs.Â
The Leafs and Pilots will start Saturday's games at 12:00 pm instead of the originally scheduled 1:00 pm start time.
