Goshen offense limited on the road against the Wildcats

Barrows threw a complete game in the 3-0 game two loss

MARION, Ind. - Goshen fell behind early and could not slow a powerful Indiana Wesleyan lineup in a 14-1, five-inning game one loss Friday afternoon at Sue Bowman Field. The Leafs dropped a pitchers' duel in game two, falling 3-0.

Game One
The Maple Leafs gave up three runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third before the Wildcats broke the game open with an eight-run fourth. The contest ended after five innings by run rule, with Indiana Wesleyan not needing to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Goshen's offense produced five hits against Wildcats starter Isabelle Beidelschies, breaking through in the top of the third. After a leadoff baserunner, Tatem Adams lined a single to right field to score Audrey White, trimming the deficit to 5-1 at the time. Adams reached base in all three plate appearances, finishing 2-2 with an RBI and a walk to pace the Maple Leafs' attack.

Indiana Wesleyan answered immediately in the bottom of the third and then put the game out of reach in the fourth. The Maple Leafs' pitching staff worked 4.0 innings and was charged with 14 runs, 11 earned, on 12 hits and six walks. The Wildcats' staff held Goshen without an extra-base hit and issued only two walks along with two hit batters. Goshen finished with five hits, two walks and a sacrifice while being held scoreless in four of the five innings.

Game Two
In the second game, the Maple Leafs were held to a single hit over seven innings.

The decisive stretch came in the bottom of the second inning, when the Wildcats broke a scoreless game with a pair of runs. IWU later added insurance in the fifth to push the margin to 3-0.

Goshen starter Camryn Barrows turned in a complete-game effort in the circle, keeping the Maple Leafs within striking distance throughout. Barrows worked 6.0 innings and was charged with six hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out three on 112 pitches. The right-hander allowed just one run in four of the six frames and helped limit Indiana Wesleyan to four runners left on base.

Defensively, Goshen backed Barrows with a clean night in the field, committing no errors while navigating traffic against an Indiana Wesleyan lineup that finished with six hits and three stolen bases. Offensively, however, Goshen could not solve Indiana Wesleyan starter Avery Toole. The Maple Leafs managed just one hit and one walk while being held scoreless, stranding four runners on base.

Goshen is at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
