MARION, Ind. - The Goshen baseball team battled in game one of a doubleheader, but a late surge by Indiana Wesleyan proved to be the difference in a 5-3 loss. In game two, the Maple Leafs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but a 10-2 run by the Wildcats shifted momentum and resulted in an 11-5 defeat.
Game One
The Maple Leafs struck first in the third inning when
AJ Carrasquillo delivered an RBI single to score
Nathaniel Muriel and give Goshen a 1-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a sacrifice fly from Jay Tomes. The run was ruled unearned following a scoring adjustment.
Goshen regained momentum in the fourth inning behind a solo home run from
Chris Godden, putting the Maple Leafs back on top, 2-1. However, Indiana Wesleyan responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 advantage.
After several scoreless innings, Goshen battled back in the seventh. Godden again sparked the rally with a double, and
Joel Berkholz followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
The Wildcats answered immediately in the bottom of the seventh. A solo home run from Trevor Vojtkofsky gave Indiana Wesleyan the lead, and an unearned run later in the inning extended the advantage to 5-3 - a margin that held through the final innings.
Godden led the way offensively for the Maple Leafs, recording three hits, including a home run and a double. His performance marked the first time in his career that he has recorded multiple extra-base hits in a single game, as well as his third career three-hit performance. Over the last six games, Godden is hitting .471.
On the mound,
Brandon Wright Barron delivered a strong outing, pitching 5.2 innings - the longest start of his career - while recording a career-high seven strikeouts.
Adam Traylor was charged with the loss for Goshen.
Game Two
The Maple Leafs came out strong in game two, but a big third inning from Indiana Wesleyan proved to be the difference in an 11-5 loss.
Goshen jumped out early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning after
Fernando Marte Santana drove in
Nathaniel Muriel with an RBI single. The Maple Leafs added to their lead in the second when
Chris Godden launched a solo home run to make it 2-0.
Indiana Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run to take a 3-2 lead, but Goshen answered right back in the third.
Aidan Calvey delivered a clutch two-RBI triple to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 advantage.
The Wildcats quickly shifted momentum in the bottom half of the inning, erupting for six runs to take control. Indiana Wesleyan added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to extend the lead.
Goshen continued to compete, adding a run in the fifth inning when Godden drove in Calvey with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-5, but the Maple Leafs were unable to close the gap late.
Godden continued his strong day at the plate, finishing with two hits, including a home run and two RBIs. Calvey added two RBIs on his triple, while Marte Santana recorded two hits and an RBI. Goshen totaled 10 hits in the contest, tied for their second-highest mark this season.
Calvey recorded his first career triple, while
Steven Lopez notched his first career multi-hit game. Marte Santana recorded multiple hits for the fourth time in the last six games and is hitting .476 during that stretch.
On the mound,
Logan Wilson got the start for the Maple Leafs, recording seven strikeouts to match his career high.
Drew Sanford,
Aaron Matthews and
Lance Wilson all saw action in relief, with Matthews delivering a scoreless inning.
Logan Wilson was charged with the loss for Goshen.
