GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Men's volleyball came back from being down two sets to one and defeated Aquinas on the road on Thursday night. The Leafs won 21-25, 28-26, 28-30, 25-22, 15-12.
Goshen has won seven of the last 11 matches against the Saints. This was the third straight time the two teams played to five sets. With eight wins on the season, Goshen has doubled their win total from a season ago.
After dropping the first set 25-21, and facing an early 9-4 deficit in the second frame, the Leafs battled back and responded to three different Aquinas set points by winning the final three points and taking the second set 28-26.
Mathis Doladille had a kill to tie it at 26-26,
Gavin Furgerson's kill gave Goshen the lead, and an ace from Doladille ended the set.
Aquinas was on the winning end of a marathon third set with a score of 30-28. The Saints led 21-17 in the fourth, but that was when Goshen went on a 7-0 run to go up 24-21. Aquinas' Connor Staats had four attack errors in that stretch, while Furgerson had two kills for the Leafs and Doladille had an ace. A kill from
Igor Sapucaia gave Goshen a 25-22 win.
As the teams played to 15 in the fifth and final set, Goshen led early at 5-2 and 8-5 when they switched sides. GC had crucial blocks - first from
Ryan Kabrich and
Gavin Furgerson to bump up their lead to 11-9 and then one from
Ishmail Bangura to go up 12-9. The Leafs held strong and won 15-12. This was Goshen's third five-set win of the season.
Gavin Furgerson finished with 23 kills, a .378 hitting percentage and eight digs. His previous high for kills in a match was 12, and five for digs in a match.
Nash Hubick had 36 assists and
Igor Sapucaia added 16 more. The Leafs had 21 block assists - their second-highest as a team this season.
Mathis Doladille had six of them and
Ryan Kabrich had four.
Ben Koop and
Nash Hubick had three each.
Andrea Biffi led the team in digs with 12.
