Leafs win five-set road matches on back-to-back nights with win at Cornerstone

A dominant 9-1 run to end the fifth powered GC to victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second straight night, men's volleyball won a five-set match on the road. The Leafs took down Cornerstone 14-25, 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 15-5. Goshen had lost seven straight to the Golden Eagles - this was their first win against Cornerstone since March 26, 2022.

It was a rough start for the Leafs, but they were able to flip the script after the first set. Cornerstone had a .478 hitting percentage in the first set while Goshen was at -.105. Yet while the Golden Eagles had just one attack error in the first set, they had 11 in the second. Goshen led 9-4 early in the set and maintained that five-point win at 25-20.

With the teams tied 15-15 after a 7-2 run from the home team, Goshen head coach Wyatt Bollinger called a timeout and the Leafs came back from it on a 6-0 run. Cornserstone responded with five straight but Goshen won four of the last six and won the set by three. Cornerstone went up 19-10 in the fourth and closed the set with a 25-17 win.

It came down to the fifth set - which Goshen dominated from the opening serve. With a 5-1 start, the Leafs later went on a 4-0 run that included a pair of kills from Ishmail Bangura. It was a part of a longer 9-1 stretch that ended the match with a 15-5 set win for GC.

Andrea Biffi had 15 digs for Goshen, followed by ten each from Ben Koop and Gavin Furgerson. Nash Hubick had 30 assists and seven digs. Mathis Doladille had two solo blocks, five block assists, five digs and five aces. Ryan Kabrich had five block assists, Ishmail Bangura had four and Koop added three more. Koop had 13 kills and Bangura was close behind with 12.
