GOSHEN, Ind. - Marian improved to 13-3 this season and 8-0 in the Crossroads League with a doubleheader sweep over Goshen on Monday. The Knights, who are receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, won by scores of 12-5 and 43-3.
Game One
Marian had a slight 3-2 lead through the first five innings of game one.
Logan Wilson had six strikeouts and two walks allowed in five innings pitched for Goshen, allowing four hits, three runs and two earned runs. The Leafs had scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run from Fernando Marte that also scored
Troy Griffin.
With Wilson now out of the game after 88 pitches thrown, the Knights scored four in the sixth and another in the seventh.
Aidan Calvey hit a sac fly for Goshen to make it an 8-3 game through seven innings. Marian added four more in the eighth and Calvey added a two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. That made it 12-5, which would end up being the final score.
Wilson had the loss for Goshen.
Drew Sanford pitched the last 1.2 innings for GC, allowing no earned runs. He had two strikeouts and one walk. Calvey went 1-3 with three RBIs.
Troy Griffin was 2-5 with a run and a stolen base.
Nick Padron scored two runs and Fernando Marte had a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Game Two
The second game got away quickly from the Maple Leafs. The Knights scored seven runs in the first inning before putting up 14 in the second. They finished with 30 hits, 14 of them for extra-bases. They walked 12 times and were hit by pitches 11 times.
Goshen got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as
Nasir Baldwin walked on a wild pitch, that also scored
Barron Welsh from third base. The next inning, Welsh scored again in addition to
Zak Henrich after a
Nathaniel Muriel single.
The Leafs finished with seven hits - led by two doubles and two runs scored from freshman
Barron Welsh. These were the first two extra-base hits for Welsh this season.
Nathaniel Muriel also had two hits - the first multi-hit game of his career.
Goshen hosts Bethel on Friday, March 13, at 1:00 pm.
