Taylor uses big innings to close out four-game sweep

Calvey homered and Griffin was 3-3 in game two

GOSHEN, Ind. - #1 Taylor completed a four-game sweep over the Maple Leafs on Saturday at "Sarge" Yoder Field. The Trojans won 14-4 and 14-2 and now sit at 38-3 this season and 26-2 in the Crossroads League.

Game One
It was a quick first inning for Brandon Wright Barron - the Trojans scored no runs and had just one baserunner in the first inning of the first three games in the series. Goshen scored first on an RBI groundout from Fernando Marte Santana in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, the guests scored five runs on two hits and two GC errors. It was still 5-1 until they tacked on a run from a sac fly in the fifth. Goshen scored on a balk later in the inning to make it 6-2. After a two-RBI double and a couple more sacrifice flies for Taylor, Chase Smith walked with the bases loaded and Nick Padron scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-4. The rest of the runs came from the Trojans - capped off with a solo homer in the eighth from Fletcher Roemmich - as they won 14-4.

Brandon Wright Barron had the loss for the Leafs. He allowed five runs in four innings, but only one was an earned run. He walked seven batters. Goshen put together eight hits - only one less than Taylor. Aidan Calvey and Jackson Whittington had two singles each. Chase Smith had a double and walked twice.

Game Two
Taylor scored four first-inning runs and hit the ground running in game two. Aidan Calvey answered with a homer in the bottom of the first, but the Maple Leafs were unable to close the gap any further. Taylor added five runs in the second and two more in the third inning.

Aidan Calvey scored again in the sixth, this time on a wild pitch after initially reaching base on a fielder's choice. Taylor put up three runs in the seventh and won 14-2.

Adam Traylor had the loss for Goshen. Troy Griffin was 3-3 with a double and two singles, producing half of the team's hits.

The Maple Leafs host Grace Christian on Tuesday, April 14, at 4:00 pm for a single nine-inning game.
