GOSHEN, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan had a strong finish to game one and a strong start to game two, as the Goshen Maple Leafs were swept on Tuesday at the GC Softball Complex. IWU, which is receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, won 12-0 in game one and 9-1 in game two.
Game One
Camryn Barrows had a strong start in the circle for the Leafs, in what appeared to be a pitcher's duel early on. The first run wasn't scored until the top of the fourth - a home run from Maddie Martin that was just inside the left field foul pole. This was the first hit allowed by Barrows in the game.
Barrows allowed a pair of singles in the top of the sixth and was then removed from the game after 89 pitches. The Wildcats went on to score 11 runs in the inning - which included a bases clearing triple and later on a three-run home run.
Barrows gave up three earned runs in five innings pitched. Goshen had three hits - a double from
Kaylee Kline and singles off the bats of
Audrey White and
Hayden McGuire.
Game Two
The Wildcats continued their hitting spree early in game two. They had a four-run first inning and put up three in the second. Down 7-0, the Leafs scored their first run of the game when
Bianca Diamond was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Esme Pico.
Pico was the starter for GC, and though she struggled early, she settled down as the innings went on. She allowed seven runs on eight hits in the first two innings and then two runs on five hits across the next four innings.
The Leafs had six hits in the game.
Camryn Barrows was 2-3 with a single and a double.
Hayden McGuire hit a double and
Esme Pico,
Brinleigh Arredondo and
Bianca Diamond all had singles.
Goshen hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday, April 17, at 3:00 pm.
