Late rally and Barrows' complete game lead to game one win as MVNU takes game two

Barrows throws a seven-inning complete game with nine strikeouts; MVNU pulls away late in game two

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen split two games with Mount Vernon Nazarene at home on Friday after splitting with the Cougars in Mount Vernon earlier in the season. Goshen won game one 3-2 but MVNU won the second game 11-4.

Game One
Mount Vernon scored two early runs in the first inning off of Camryn Barrows on four hits. Barrows cut the lead in half herself in the bottom of the first. She sent a homer deep to center field to make it 2-1.

MVNU left a pair of runners on base in both the third and fifth innings. The score stayed the same until a major bottom of the sixth for the Maple Leafs. With one out, Barrows walked and Esme Pico came in to pinch hit. She doubled to right center and Barrows made it around to score and tie the game. Later in the inning, with two outs, pinch runner Serenidy Mitchem scored the go-ahead run, which ended up being the winning run. The visitors went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and Goshen earned the comeback win.

Goshen's last three wins against MVNU have all been one-run victories. Barrows moved to 7-6 with the complete game win. She allowed two earned runs in seven innings and had nine strikeouts and no walks. This is the second-most strikeouts she has had in a game this season in which she has also recorded zero walks. In addition to Pico's double and Barrows' home run, Tatem Adams and Rachel Kates hit singles for the Leafs. Barrows scored twice and Mitchem once. Barrows also had an RBI and two of Goshen's three walks.

Game Two
The second game started evenly matched, but the Cougars pulled through in the last three innings.

The Leafs held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, thanks to RBI singles by Bianca Diamond and Tatem Adams. Camryn Barrows and Diamond scored. The Cougars scored in the top of the second, and the teams were tied 2-2 through the fourth inning.

Mount Vernon scored two runs on four hits in the fifth and four runs on four hits in the sixth. GC got on the board for the first time in five innings when Celeste Gutierrez doubled to right and made it 8-3 once Hayden McGuire scored. MVNU responded with a three-run seventh, which included a two-run home run by Avery Miller. Barrows scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, but the Leafs lost 11-4.

Esme Pico had the loss, allowing seven earned in five innings. She had four strikeouts and no walks but gave up 15 hits. Gutierrez had two of Goshen's seven hits - a single and a double. This was her second two-hit game in the last four games - she is hitting .318 for the season. Barrows hit a double and scored two runs. Bianca Diamond had two singles to her name.

Goshen hosts Huntington on Saturday, April 18, at 1:00 pm for Senior Day. Senior recognition will take place at 12:40 pm with Ella Mcleod, Bianca Diamond, Sydney Lockhart, Jasmin Smith and Esme Pico being recognized.
