Pico homers in final collegiate home game but Cougars sweep doubleheader

Goshen locked in the eight-seed in the Crossroads League tournament

GOSHEN, Ind. - Esme Pico homered in her final home game as a Maple Leaf to highlight Goshen's doubleheader with Spring Arbor on Tuesday. The Cougars won 8-0 and 15-4 just before the rain came in.

Game One
The Cougars had their ace, Emilee Underwood, in the circle for game one. Underwood leads the Crossroads League in ERA, wins and strikeouts. She allowed just three hits in the game.

Esme Pico was Goshen's starter. She allowed an early solo shot in the first inning and two unearned runs in the third. Goshen's best chance offensively came in the bottom of the fourth. Camryn Barrows singled and Tatem Adams had a double down the left field line that put Barrows on third. With two runners in scoring position, the Leafs finished the inning with a foul out and a popup, keeping the score at 3-0 in favor of Spring Arbor.

The game opened up in the sixth inning when SAU scored five more runs on six hits and two Goshen errors. Pico went five innings, allowing two earned runs and four total runs. Pico is in the top ten in program history in wins and innings pitched with at least three games to go. Shay Pipher allowed three earned runs and four total runs in an inning pitched. The Leafs had doubles from Audrey White and Tatem Adams and a single from Camryn Barrows.

Game Two
Goshen had already secured a spot in the Crossroads League tournament heading into the games with Spring Arbor, but with the game one loss, Goshen was already locked into the eight seed. Tatem Adams had the start in game two. She allowed two runs in the first inning, but the Cougars truly left a mark in the second inning. They had ten runs on six hits and made it a 12-0 ballgame.

Shay Pipher pitched the last 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run and three total runs. She gave up three hits and struck out two and walked none. Camryn Barrows hit a triple in the bottom of the third that scored Danica Bergeron. Pipher hit a single down the left field line that scored Barrows. In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Esme Pico hit a two-run home run to right center - her second home run this season and the sixth of her collegiate career. Spring Arbor left with a 15-4 win.

In addition to Pico's home run and a triple from Barrows, Pipher and White hit singles.

Goshen wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 25, at Taylor at 1:00 pm. The first game for the Leafs in the Crossroads League tournament, which will be a play-in game against the five seed, will be on Tuesday, April 28, hosted by the University of Saint Francis.
