Saint Francis takes two from Goshen in high-scoring, low-scoring split

Goshen scored five in the first inning of game one and got a Calvey home run in game two, but USF swept the doubleheader

GOSHEN, Ind. - Saint Francis used their offensive prowess in the first game and their pitching in the second to take a doubleheader sweep  against the Maple Leafs on Thursday. The Cougars won 21-9 and 2-1.

Game One
The Cougars scored three first inning runs but the Leafs quickly answered with five in the bottom half of the inning. Troy Griffin hit a two-RBI double down the right field line that nearly cleared the loaded bases. Jackson Whittington immediately followed it up with a two-RBI single to center. He stole second and later stole third - making it home on the same play after a throwing error from the pitcher.

In the bottom of the fourth, the score was 5-4 when Whittington walked with the bases loaded and Hunter Oborn then hit a sac fly to left field to score Fernando Marte Santana. The 7-4 lead was erased in the top of the fourth as the Cougars scored 11 runs on five hits and three Goshen errors. Marte Santana's two-RBI double down the left field line closed the gap, making the score 15-9. The Cougars scored once in the fifth and added five more runs in the eighth to win by run rule after eight innings by a 21-9 score.

Three of Goshen's five hits were doubles from Aidan Calvey, Fernando Marte Santana and Troy Griffin. Marte Santana also had a single, as did Jackson Whittington. Whittington had three RBIs and two stolen bases. Marte Santana scored twice and had two RBIs.

Braylon Pond had the loss, allowing six runs, all unearned, in two innings of work.

Game Two
While the teams combined for 30 runs in game one, they produced just three between them in the second contest. USF took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout and scored a second run in the fourth from a single hit down the left field line from AJ Patton that scored Owen Zimmerman.

As the first batter in the bottom of the sixth, Aidan Calvey homered to left field - his third home run of the season. Aaron Matthews came in to pitch the seventh for the Leafs and did his part. In the bottom of the seventh, the Leafs were not able to score either, and the Cougars won 2-1.

Goshen starter Braxton Nagy had the loss. He allowed two earned runs in three innings pitched on three hits. Baylor Orcutt threw an impressive three innings of relief, allowing no runs to come through and just one hit. He had three strikeouts and no walks allowed.

Calvey finished 2-3 with a home run and a double. Troy Griffin and Landen Hirsch each had singles and Joey Paternostro walked twice.

Goshen finishes their season on Saturday against the Cougars at 1:00 pm in Goshen. Seniors Owen Tyers, Yanick Loiselle, Chris Godden, Fernando Marte Santana, Lance Wilson, Hunter Oborn, AJ Lenn and Steven Lopez will be recognized after the first game.
