Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Kate Bodiker

Maple Leafs kick off conference season early with loss to Taylor

Despite several nice rallies, the Leafs couldn't win the battles at the net

UPLAND, Ind. - In what marks the earliest start to conference play in program history, women's volleyball fell to the Taylor Trojans in straight sets. Though the Leafs found some improvements in the second set, it wasn't enough to overcome Taylor at the net.

In the end, the final scores were 25-9, 25-17, and 25-13 for Taylor.

The Trojans are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll and Ruth Anderson, who had six kills against the Leafs, was named national attacker of the week in women's volleyball earlier in the day. In this matchup, the Trojans leading attacker was Reagan Kleiman, who picked up nine kills and was hitting .500 across the sets.

Carmin Corey and Railynn Bowman once again led the Leafs in kills with five apiece, and Armani Guidry-Austin and Ava Schneider were close behind with four each, though hitting percentage was a struggle for all of the Leafs and they gave up a series of points to attacking errors.

They have started picking up some confidence at the net though, as Guidry-Austin and Bowman both grabbed two blocks for the nights, the totals of which have been steadily increasing as the season goes on.

Jessie Price picked up two aces on the night, including on that roll over the top of the net to fall short of the Trojans defense, which marks a great serving start for her. She has already matched her number of multi-ace matches from last year with most of the season left to play.

Mary Osten led GC in digs with 12 across the sets and Sydney Stutsman rounded out the statistical leaders with 13 assists.

The Leafs are back in action Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 6:00 p.m. CST | 7:00 p.m. EST when they are on the road in Gary, IN to take on the RedHawks of Indiana University Northwest.
