Maple Leafs pick up first win of the season over IUSB

Lang leads Leafs to victory after a decisive goal from distance

GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's soccer picks up their first win of the season in a 1-0 victory over Indiana University at South Bend. Though the first half was scoreless, Eliana Lang found the winning goal 10 minutes into the second half. This is her first goal on the season, as well as the first goal for the Leafs.

The Leafs defense was also a huge factor in the win, as Hailey Ballast picked up a career high 10 saves against the Titans and held them scoreless for all 90 minutes of action.

Lang's goal was unassisted, as she picked up her own deflection off the IUSB defenders to send in a powerful shot from well outside the 18 yard box that sailed over the hands of Mikayla Saunders, who was unable to get the deflection.

Sophia Yoder led the Leafs in shots with five over the course of the game, three of which were on frame. Lang followed with four shots, with her one on target converting to the goal.

The freshman Cali Tadman followed Yoder and Lang with all three of her shots falling on frame, but all picked up by Saunders.

GC had a few more fouls on the day, 10 to the Titans eight, but no yellow cards were awarded and the only goal came in the 55th minute. This win puts GC at 1-2 on the season as they prepare for conference play in about a month.

The Maple Leafs are back in action on Wednesday, Sep. 2 at 5 p.m. — on the road but close to home again as they take on the Saints of Holy Cross College in Notre Dame.
