COLUMBUS, Ind. - Men's soccer fell in their last road game before the start of the conference season 3-1 to IU Columbus. The Maple Leafs started a very young team for the match, and brought in 12 substitutes during the game — picking up a lot of minutes before the season starts to shift.
The Leafs came out strong in the first half, with Jorge Silva scoring a goal in the 16th minute. He was assisted by David Hidalgo Muniain and Noah Gray, and GC held on to the lead for the next 20 minutes.
Then, in the 35th minute, Matheus Ornellas Gubert answered for the Crimson Pride and picked up their first goal. It was only two minutes later that Jake Hofelich scored for IU Columbus as well, in the 37th minute of action. About a minute and a half later, Ornellas Gubert picked up his second goal of the night in the 39th minute.
After this tough patch before the halftime break, the Leafs struggled to recover and get back their points in the second half. There was a relatively low number of shots on the game, with only 13 for the Crimson Pride and four for the Leafs. Martim Alves, Noah Gray, and Gabriel Ferreira picked up one apiece to round out the total for the Leafs.
The Maple Leafs are back in action on Wednesday, Sep. 23 — back at the John Ingold Athletic Complex to kick off Crossroads League action as they face the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars at 6 p.m.
