LIMA, Oh. - Women's volleyball was on the road to compete at the Racer Rumble, where they faced off against UNOH and Governors State University, falling to UNOH 3-1 and GSU 3-0.
UNOH was the first match on the docket for the day, where the Leafs eventually lost 25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 25-14, though they did find one set win. In the first set, the Racers started hot, leading 7-2, before GC brought it back within two. They went on a 5-1 run before the Leafs pulled it back within touching distance again with the score at 16-18. The Leafs only managed three more points, as UNOH took the lead.
GC started set two well, with Emese Southwick getting a brace of kills, before Mary Osten scored a service ace to give the Leafs a 3-0 lead. UNOH pulled it back to within a point, before Jessie Price scored with a service ace and Railynn Bowman and Armani Guidry-Austin got kills. GC and the Racers continued to trade points and with the score at 20-16, Bri Morris scored with two service aces and then assisted Ava Schneider on two kills to bring the set to set point. GC then gave up 2 points before Schneider scored with a kill to win the set and tie up the match.
In the third set, the teams traded points and had the game tied at 8 before Elle Stark scored on three kills in quick succession to start a 7-0 scoring run for UNOH to bring the score to 15-8. The Leafs biggest scoring streak came in the form of a 5-1 run with a service ace from Price as well as a brace of kills from Guidry-Austin and a kill from Lard to bring the score to 17-15. A series of attack errors followed from both teams, before Jersey Webb scored on a kill to secure the set for UNOH.
The fourth set saw the Leafs run out of steam after battling hard in the first three. After starting the set trading scores and had the game tied at 10. UNOH then scored 11 unanswered to leave the set sitting at 21-11. The Leafs pulled three points back before Stark scored on two kills before an attacking error from the Leafs gave the Racers the match.
During the game, Southwick and Guidry-Austin both had their season high in blocks, recording 3 and 5 respectively Schneider had her third career game with ten kills and Carle Bruggema achieved her career high of assists with 33, beating her previous high by 12.
A few hours later, the Leafs took to the court again, this time against GSU. The Leafs lost 25-12, 25-16, 25-16.
The first set saw the Jaguars jump out to a hot start, leading 7-2 before GC put together a 3-0 run to bring the score to within two. They put together another 3-0 run later in the set to bring the score to 13-10, before the Jaguars scored nine unanswered. Railynn Bowman and Carmin Corey scored on kills before the Jaguars put the set to bed with a kill from Lejla Rejzovic and an attacking error from the Leafs.
GC fell behind early in the second set and had to fight back hard. They tied the game up at nine, and then again at 12. From here, the Jaguars went on a 10-1 run to bring the score to 23-13 before closing the set out.Â
In the third set, GSU started well and never looked back. They led 7-3 before GC pulled it back within one. The Jaguars then went on a 9-1 run. Both teams then traded points and GC even went on a 3-0 run, before the Jaguars scored three unanswered to win the set and the match.Â
The Maple Leafs are back in action at home against the #9 Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars on Wednesday, Sep. 9 at 7 p.m.
