Matias da Fonseca joins the Maple Leafs from Torres Vedras, Portugal. He came to the United States in 2018 to get a bachelor’s degree while playing soccer - a sport he started at eight. da Fonseca played soccer for two years at Mount Mercy University before transferring to Goshen College in 2020. As a Maple Leaf,  he played three seasons as the goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team and had the opportunity to play a season with the men’s volleyball team. da Fonseca graduated from Goshen with a business major and a sports management minor and is now doing Optional Practical Training at Goshen as an Assistant to the Director of Athletics and as an Assistant Coach/Manager for the men’s soccer and men’s volleyball programs. His brother, Tomas da Fonseca, is a GC alum who was also a goalkeeper and a member of the men’s soccer team. Matias credits his brother as the reason he decided to come to Goshen - because he showed him how wonderful GC is and how welcoming and friendly the community is. da Fonseca hopes to learn a lot from Goshen College's athletic leadership team and to have an impact on helping our student-athletes build strong character, grow their athletic abilities, and succeed academically.
