Victor Newberg enters his fourth season as the Maple Leafs' head men's soccer coach at Goshen College in 2022.
Newberg came to Goshen after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Trine University, helping the Thunder to 18 wins in 2017 (5-7-6 record) and 2018 (13-3-2 record). The year before their staff arrived at Trine, the team had a record of 0-16-3.
Prior to Trine he spent two seasons at Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana, including one as the head coach. During his first year as the program's top assistant coach, the team made a run to finish third in the NJCAA, the furthest the program has ever gotten. In his lone season as head coach the team went 11-3-1. His combined record with the Chargers was 29-5-1.
"I would like to thank Harold Watson and the search committee for allowing me to lead the Goshen College Men's Soccer program," said Newberg. "I believe in the vision and excitement around Goshen College and I look forward to being a part of that vision."
"Newberg is an outstanding young coach who separated himself from a deep pool of candidates," said Watson. "Beyond his winning experience with both Trine and Ancilla, Coach Newberg crosses off a lot boxes in terms of the key attributes he brings to the Goshen athletic department including the ability to create a first class student-athlete experience, high character, positivity, and top level recruiting. What stood out to the committee was his ability to help our young men grow in all facets of their life, including spiritually, academically and athletically."
Newberg played college soccer for St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. During his time as a midfielder for the Green Knights, he helped the program to a 42-21-4 record. Coach Newberg has also spent time in the area working the club circuit at Junior Irish Soccer Club, where he has served as the program's technical director,as well as a head coach in the program.
"This program has a strong history of success of league championships, NAIA tournament appearances and most recently competing for Crossroads League tournament championships," Newberg said. "We will strive to maintain that established success while building a Christ-centered culture to lead us forward that is founded around servant leadership, a strong work ethic, positive attitudes, respect for all, and displaying integrity in all we do. I am grateful and humbled to join the Goshen College family."
