Nofziger's Goal Not Enough To Halt Pilot Upending

Box Score

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The momentum carried out of a four-goal win came to an abrupt end Wednesday night for the Goshen College men's soccer team as the Maple Leafs dropped a 5-1 decision at Bethel College in Crossroads League action.

Brodie Nofziger scored for Goshen (5-11) with 14:25 left in regulation, 36 seconds after Bethel (9-6-1) pulled ahead 5-0. Pedro Amaral scored the first, second and fifth Pilot goals, posting the second hat trick by a Crossroads League player this season: Octavian Sayumwe and Floris de Koning added the other two tallies to set the final score.

Amaral tallied in the 15th minute (assisted by Finn Luben and Helton Moura) and again in the 18th (assisted by Ignacio Aviles): it would be another 11 minutes before the score was 3-0, then nine again before the halftime mark of 4-0.

Bethel finished the game with 24 shots to Goshen's 11 and 14 attempts on frame. Goshen goalkeeper Dean Nafziger made eight saves, while Isaac Lindahl and Philip Keller made two apiece for Bethel. Each team took four corner kicks in the match.

Despite the loss, Goshen remains at .500 in the Crossroads League, sitting by themselves in sixth place at 4-4 entering the final round of games on Saturday. The Maple Leafs trail three 4-3-1 teams (including Bethel) by a point, close enough to leapfrog them with a win: Goshen could still finish anywhere from alone in third to a tie for seventh.

The Maple Leafs will travel to Huntington University on Saturday to close out the regular season. Owing to the spread of kickoff times throughout the afternoon, Goshen will need to post a result and do its scoreboard-watching later: Goshen and Huntington kick off at 2 p.m., while three of the other four teams between third and eighth kick off at 7 p.m. 91.1 the Globe has slated live coverage for the Goshen/Huntington match beginning at 1:45.

More, including comments from Goshen coach Arron Patrick, to come when available.
