Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An early score put the Maple Leafs in a hole and a late one sealed the result Saturday night as Cornerstone University defeated Goshen 3-0 in men's soccer non-conference action.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the game when Garrett Nimmo scored on a rebound after Caleb Colp shot: in the 18th minute, Diego Bobadilla cleaned up another Colp rebound to make the score 2-0.
Goshen held a majority of possession in the second half and kept the score steady at 2-0 until the final minute, when a Bobadilla free kick was finished by Allyn Anthony for a third Cornerstone goal with 32 seconds remaining.
Despite the lopsided final score, the teams finished level with 12 total shots. Cornerstone held the edge in shots on goal (9-7), but Goshen had more corner kicks (5-4).
All 12 of Goshen's shots came from freshmen, led by Nate Nussbaum with seven: Spencer Aeschliman and Isaac Huerta finished with two apiece and Jesus Dominguez Olvera rounded out the category with one.
In goal, freshman Johan Escalante and senior Dean Nafziger made three saves apiece.
The Maple Leafs have little time to sulk over the defeat, as their next contest begins approximately 69 hours after Saturday's game finished. Siena Heights University provides the opposition for Tuesday night's home opener, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
