Box Score CHICAGO — An 81st-minute strike from Nate Nussbaum was the only Goshen shot to find the back of the net as the Goshen College men's soccer team lost 2-1 to St. Xavier University Wednesday night in Chicago.
The Cougars scored 14:08 into the second half when Marco Gutierrez cleaned up the rebound from a Ricardo Aldape shot.
A little less than 17 minutes later, the Cougars were called for a foul when Brodie Nofziger went down on the edge of the penalty area. Nussbaum stepped up to the mark but missed his shot wide left. So, too, was his next shot, from the run of play two and a half minutes later. The third shot in a five-minute span was the one that counted, a free ball dribbled into the penalty area and lobbed over the goalkeeper from 15 yards.
Each team mustered one more shot in regulation. In overtime, another Goshen shot missed wide left in the first 40 seconds: with the first goal ending the match, that would have sent the visitors home victorious.
Instead, the Cougars scored after 3 minutes and 41 seconds. A corner kick from Erik Ramirez was deflected and apparently cleared, but Orlando Tapia rifled a shot into the top of the net for a 2-1 win.
The loss drops Goshen's record to 1-5 while St. Xavier improved to 2-2. The Maple Leafs return to action Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
